Hi, I ordered a Colt M4 AEG from an Irish company onine. The rifle was advertised as 'Energy: Up to 1J (310-325 FPS) v.2 gearbox'. When the package arrived the instructions indicated that I had been sent a limited edition rifle Energy: 1,7J (550 FPS). Purely and simply am I in possession of an illegal item?

It will be under one joule, all Cybergun packaging is the same, it all states sillyness.

A quick, very rough and simple test to do at home if you are worried.
    Poor mans Chrono

There was a box for a gun, an ARMY AK47 which literally declared that it contained "The worlds first mentally disabled rapper" (google it) but alas, twas all lies, and a plasticky tokyo marui clone was all that dwelt within.

Moral of the story, don't believe everything you read on the side of a box.

Not at all in anyway remotely close to being accurate. Get thyself to an Airsoft site and chrono the aeg. Plenty of people here will give you a lend of a chrono as well.

Don't listen to the box, My M4 (cybergun) was apparently over 500 fps

Put simply, if you are concerned, contact the retailer in question. If you ordered online, give them your order number, and express your concern. They'll be able to sort you out.

You'll note the words "very rough". And I agree getting to a shop/site is a good idea but for this evening, if it cant punch through one side of a can, you are probably safe.
