Time to start going forth and finding out what the processes are in countries with colder climates than our own. If cold weather such as we're having is to become the norm I can see that thinks may go like the mass feeding they do with game in the USA.

No need to do any massive research into this by anyone. It's simple ,in the EU..Continue hunting in weather colder than this,or until you cant do it anymore because you personally are too cold..And the season ends 31st Dec!!
The US continue hunting until season ends whenever and you can physically get out to hunt through snowdrifts,etc..
Russia and East bloc lands...What cold weather???This Tshirt and short weather!!...Try minus FOURTY in some parts of Siberia!!

BTW Mass feeding in the US in some states is illegal...Its considerd shooting over a "baited area"..IOW you keep feeding an area over time thegame knows it will get a free feed there and flock into the place, where you can shoot it enmasse.
Time to lobby the NARGC and Govt that this cold weather ban has to go,or be seriously re thought.

well lads the wood cock and snipe come down here cos its too cold in scandiavia and russia, so they find it hard in the snow. i have been seeing them on the sides of roads and drains looking for food. If we keep getting this weather may be thelly move futher south to spain or somewhere

Some sort of plan does need to be put into place by the nargc, I'm surprised they haven't some legislation in place for such winters like this. I dont think banning shooting for a few days at a time, as they see fit, counts as having a "plan" in place. Ive put alot of work into rearing birds, training the new pup and im still checking and topping up the feed hoppers reguraly.

The christmas hols is the one time of the season that i get to go out for my few shots and meet up with the shooting buddies that may not always be around, due to work or whatever. Afaik the current shooting ban is over tonight, now if they come out and ban it over the hols then i think im going to do something very childish and scream!! And maybe because of this time we've missed out on they should look into maybe extending the season a small bit.

It's already been extended to the 30th.

it's gone beyond a joke at this stage, there was a good break in the weather last week ground was clear and plenty of happy birds about still we were not able to shoot them:confused:

the way things are going it wont be long before there is no wild bird shooting allowed and the only thing you can point a gun at is going to be made out of clay:eek:

im sure the countrys that do have propper winters continue to let the shooters work away and shoot what they can/want in the very short season they have.

im sure most lads in ireland wont go out in weather like we have at the moment, but why punish the minority of us that like to be out in all weathers and in touch with what nature has to offer:mad:

What the “Powers-That-Be” fail to take into account is that the severe weather affects the hunter as well as the prey. The number of hunters willing to go out in these conditions drops. The ones that do go out are faced with a more difficult hunt which usually ends up shorter than normal and with less of a bag. All this, on average, leads to a higher survival rate for the strong healthy birds which is balanced out by the loss of the weaker ones to the weather.
If you stop thinking of Man as an outside factor interfering with the balance of Nature and start viewing the system as a whole, you realise that Nature, including Man finds its own balance.
By laying down a complete ban on hunting they are creating an unnatural situation that could lead to an increased number of birds at the close of the season. Not necessarily a bad thing, especially if it can be used to prove the complete lack of any need to interfere with next year’s season.

MAybe they should start next season earlier to compensate - particularly if these type of winters are more then just a blip going forward:confused:

Pheasent used to start Oct1st if I remember rightly??

As for migratory birds moving further South, maybe, but possibly if we have consistently cold winters for the next decade or more.By then more than likely we will all have moved further South as well??:D

Or by us culling them by hunting.True some healthy birds will be taken as well, but thats the way it is.Not to mind it is tiny the amount of birds we would take as hunters here from the migratory pouplations of duck, geese, woodcock and pheasents.

All of us on here typing and moaning about the short season wont solve notthing if we wait for someone else to sort it for us. Time we moved for ourselfs, is anybody in favour of a petition to; start the season in the middle of October lets say the 15th of October every year? Middle of October is reasonable for hunters, birds and hopefully anti's alike.

Its just an idea, as Im in favour of controlling numbers. Ive seen hens leaving nests due to over population of cocks. Im not forwarding the suggestion because I am blood thirsty, so please dont catch the wrong end of the stick.
Civalised and common sense discussion would do us all favours. No jumping down the barrel, excuse the pun.

I will get some almercifull criticism after writing this..
