My car keys were stolen and I don't have a spare (yes I know, didn't get one with the car). I drive a 1998 Toyota Corolla which has an immobiliser. To get a new key I have been quoted €350 + VAT! Is this excessive or normal??

    Thanks!

Sounds fairly normal for a coded key for a Ford or an Alfa, not sure about Toyota.

Sounds crazily expensive. Check with one of the locksmiths or the lockdoctor, on the website.!! Another few hundred and youd have spent the price of the car:D

    coded keys are very expensive.

I got a quote of around £300 GBP for a replacement on my old rover 75 (before I sold it)

I got two spares for a 98 mazda from Cunneens in Cork, doubt it was more than 60yoyo? No alarm, no remote central locking, and they had a damaged key to readback a code from... could be the last part there that`s got you over a barrel...

Bear in mind if youre keys were stolen youre not looking to get a replacement key; youre looking to get your locks changed. Someone out there now has your car keys...

getting a locksmith to copy a key is one thing but im guessing you went to toyota?? they more than likely will be able to get you an exact copy of your key and immobilizer chip..

He found nothing in my bag (no wallet or phone) and there is nothing that will indicate where my car is!!! Good luck to him finding it!!! Would it be cheaper to get a copy and is that possible??

To confirm: your car is somewhere safe, yes? It cannot be driven away, yes? Otherwise, I'd buy a clamp, and clamp the car, as it seems you won't be able to stop someone driving it away otherwise...

It is an apartment car park and it is safe, behind a barrier.

If you have another key somewhere a car locksmith could copy it and apply the code, but you need an original key to do this, are you sure you don't have one at home somewhere?

How will they code the key? I lost mine a couple of years back and they told me they had to lift the car back to the garage to be able to code it. Cost me a small fortune, €500 anyway :(

go into a Toyota dealer and tell them your story, they might take pity on you and do you one cheap

A friend of mine recently needed a new key for a Renault Megane - dealer said it would take 2 weeks , he went somewhere else and they did it while he waited - cost 150 though.

    Try Autokey.

They came down to me quickly, and made up a key.

Car was a Jap import that Mitsubishi dealers and the usual locksmiths weren't able to help me with. Immobiliser and alarm on the car, he had the key made inside ten minutes.

Was 260 or something like that, but I would imagine it would be cheaper for a Corolla.

Tony Burke Motors Ltd., Ballybrit, Galway. It's a toyota garage.
I had original wanted a spare one so maybe that makes a difference but don't think so.
As far as I know they have record of all cars so can get the code.
