Bentone Oil Burner Problem.

Is anyone familiar with the air settings on the bentone ST 120. Its running ok apart from the flue fumes seem a bit sharp, if you get my drift. It has a low level flue so you can smell it when you walk past. I have in the past borrowed a flue gas analyser for checks but that option is not available this time.
Burner has been cleaned out, new nozzle fitted, oil pressure checked 9.5bar.etc Air set at 4 on scale out of a max of 12. If air is increased fumes get worse and if decreased to 3 soot forms on flue etc.
I know a proper Tech would sort it out with analyser etc but I would appreciate if anyone can help.
Maybe this is normal, I know fumes are not breathable quality air.
