Knocking noise in Polo

Was sitting in the car today waiting for the girlfriend to come outta a shop when I noticed the engine making a knocking noise. It stops when I rev the engine or engage the clutch, and oil levels and radiator fluid are both fine... what could be causing it?

    Belt tensioner?

It only has 14500 miles on her so far, she was given a full service at around 10500m (just before she was NCT'd and sold to me).

The knock and engine in that video sound a lot rougher than in mine... I checked the oil when cold a few weeks ago and it was near the top. Tonight my first thought was it was (for some reason) out of oil, so I checked her while hot but it showed as full... but I'm going to check her when cold tomorrow just to make sure.

Just strange that as soon as the clutch is pressed in or it's revved that it stops the knocking...

Also, I am sorry, I'm not too mechanically minded so I'm not sure what the belt tensioner is, or what it does - is it part of the timing belt setup?

when you say engage the clutch do you mean push the clutch pedal down?

Yeah, the noise is there if it's out of gear in idle, but if I press the clutch in (and leave it out of gear) the knocking stops.

I have seen references to similar problems relating to a dual mass flywheel (one possible explanation for noise stopping when clutch is pressed, and possibly at higher revs also).

I'll say no more, as I am rapidly getting out of my depth here! I don't even know whether your Polo would have a DMF.

Sounds like a release bearing to me?

    It's a 2004 1.2 petrol, the 55BHP model.

Good news, went down and checked the oil when it was cold. 3/4 full. Turned on the car and the knocking noise is gone. Happy days!

Sorry, what was the solution here? You topped it up with oil?
