Noobs Guide to Claiming (I need help)

    Ok Guys,

So my car fell victim to a skid on the ice. My own fault, I took a corner too quickly and while turning into an estate, instead of turning I slid straight into the opposite curb.

So now my two front wheels have moved back about half a foot so that trying to turn the tires results in the back of them pushing the frame off my car....I'm probably not describing that particularly well, I'm not great with car parts I'm afraid.

So now I'm learning all about insurance claims etc. I've only been driving since march although I got my full licence there in October. But as an under 25 male, I'm already getting crippled with insurance. I guess here I'm wondering what I should do. My girlfriend's dad know's a good mechanic and will level with me on what he thinks but his garage is in Ballyfermot while I'm stuck here in Killiney. It took me 10 agonising minutes to get the car from the front of my estate to my house which is about 40 meters.

I can't find the terms and conditions for my policy and my insurer is Asgard who apparently only deal through brokers so I can't get a hold of them. Someone told me that I get free breakdown service with a policy which will allow me to get it towed to the garage? So I ask ye of great wisdom here, who have helped me in the past. Is this true? should I do everything in my power to claiming against my insurance? I do really need a car and obviously a week before xmas, i'm not exactly loaded at the moment but I could muster up maybe a grand if I had to?

    What say ye?

    P.S. Thanks and Merry Christmas!

You'll first off need to check if your policy does include breakdown assist.

If you do you can ring your insurance and see if you can use it to get the car to a garage.

Seperately from that, you need to report that you have had an accident, the insurance company will come out and assess the damage, and then you can decide to either cover it yourself, or have it paid for by the insurance company, which will affect your future insurance policies.

If you don't have breakdown assist, you'll have to get the car towed to a garage if it's not driveable.

    Good luck with it.

The sentence I highlighted means you will more than likely have to pay for any repairs yourself - insurance may not cover you.

in a normal situation - you phone insurance company - they send out an assessor - you bring the car to the place they recommend (or they come and collect it) - and you collect when its repaired.

Sorry to go OT but your future policy is only affected if you make a claim? If the insurance company know you've crashed the car, they won't take it into account in the future? Or is there any record of it?

I have comprehensive. So hopefully that would be covered!

I'm just wondering if it'll cost me more in the long run to claim than to try and get it fixed myself?

It really depends on what the garage estimates the costs to be...

If you have a claim, most policies will decrease your no claims bonus by 20%, not sure how it works if you are a new driver, do you have no claims bonus protection?
