    With the BDO World Championship starting in less than a fortnight away it's time to start an offical thread on the tournament. The tournament starts on January 1st and runs till the final on January 9th. Coverage of the tournament is on BBC 1 and 2 with all games live on BBC interactive (red button).

    The full draw is here and i've divided it into the 4 quarters so it's easier to work out who'll possibly meet who in the latter stages of the tournament.

    1st QUARTER;
    Dave Prins(16) v John Walton
    Martin Adams(1) v Tony West
    Willy Van De Wiel(9) v Alan Soutar
    Tony O'Shea(8) v Ross Smith
    2nd QUARTER
    Mark Barilli(12) v Martin Phillips
    Joey Ten Berge(5) v Shaun Griffiths
    Gary Robson(13) v Steve Douglas
    Steve West(4) v Dave Chisnall
    _________________________________________________________________
    3rd QUARTER
    Scott Mitchell(15) v Jan Dekker
    Stuart Kellett(2) v Darryl Fitton
    Garry Thompson(10) v Arno Merk
    Ross Montgomery(7) v Alan Norris
    4th QUARTER
    Brian Woods(11) v Stephen Bunting
    Scott Waites(6) v Ted Hankey
    Robbie Green(14) v Andy Boulton
    Dean Winstanley(3) v Martin Atkins
    _________________________________________________________________

    Further information on betting odds and TV coverage will follow in due course.

    Here are a list of the latest odds from various betting firms,link; www.oddschecker.com/other-sports/darts/bdo-darts-world-championship/bdo-darts-world-championships/winner

    Personally I reckon Robbie Green is a great price at 40/1 and I'm going investing on him each way to reach the final. I also think that TonyO'Shea could reach the final from the other half of the draw,he should meet Martin Adams in the quarter final and I think Adams will be knocked out by O'Shea.

    this stuart kellett looks like a good out side bet played well in the last bdo tournament
    but i'd like to see either o'shea or fitton win it out

    Personally wouldn't bet on Kellet, Montgomery or Greene from that side of the draw.

    In the top half wouldn't be surprised if Walton had a good run.

    The finalist from the bottom half will come out of the match between Waites and Hankey........... It will then be between the 2 martins on the other side of the draw.............

    Fitton unseeded, O Shea number 8, Waites number 6, Hankey unseeded, Chisnall unseeded. Ok, how on earth do the BDO do their seeding.

    I'm going for an Adams / Waites final.

    The schedule of matches has been announced and here's a link to the schedule,link; www.bdodarts.com/newsitem.aspx?summary=true&cid=1000&nid=1073

    As regards TV coverage there is no live coverage of the afternoon session on the mainstream BBC channels on the opening day! Only those with the red button on their TV's will be able to watch the opening afternoon session. There is live coverage of the evening session on BBC 2 starting at 6 00 which explains why the Adams v Tony West game has been moved to the evening session.

    I will post more information on TV coverage as soon as it becomes available.

    The rankings are based on the BDO invitational tables which is players doing the tour throughout the year and gaining points towards the table.

    Chisnall and Hankey were guaranteed their places in Lakeside because of Chisnall's appearance at the final last January and Hankey been World Champion in 2009 so both players didn't really do the tour this year. Fitton only had an average year and finished outside the seedings position but did enough to qualify from about 20th position.

    Lakeside starts tomorrow but you wouldn't know such has been the complete lack of media coverage surrounding the event! With the Worlds at Ally Pally in full swing and on till Monday January 3rd there probably won't be much interest in this event until Ally Pally is over.

    The action kicks off tomorrow at 1 00pm but there is no live coverage of the afternoon session on the mainstream BBC channels! There will be live coverage of all the darts tomorrow on BBC red button from 1 00pm to 11 00pm. BBC 2 will have live coverage tomorrow evening from 6 00pm to 7 25pm.

    Here is the schedule for tomorrow's games;

    1 00pm Davy Prins v John Walton
    1 50pm Willy Van De Wiel v Alan Soutar
    2 40pm Mark Barilli v Martin Phillips
    3 30pm Ross Montgomery v Alan Norris
    6 00pm Martin Adams v Tony West
    6 50pm Gary Robson v Steve Douglas

    The Adams v West game is the stand out game tomorrow.Adams been defending champion should win this against the 2003 World Masters champion Tony West who has reportedly been ill with flu the past few days,not the best preparation going into a game against Adams.

    You can't blame them in a way. Most of the seeded BDO players would get demolished by the respectable seeds in the PDC.

    Personally I blame the BDO. The top brass in the BDO have been there far too long and seem to have no interest in promoting Lakeside.

    As regards BDO seeds been destroyed by PDC players I don't agree with this,a lot of BDO players that made the move over have done quite well and in the recent Grand Slam the BDO players performed very well and Scott Waites ended up champion.

    The rumours in other forums about the BBC wanting to make moves into the PDC could be true considering they don't seem to have too much interest in the BDO but as I said earlier the BDO are to blame here.

    BDO need a good kick up the árse to get some promotion into this event. I mean, these are the ones with the massive history and legendary matches. up the prize money and try to persuade a few names from the pdc back over.
    I always found it a bit **** having the two organizations though.

    apparently the rights for the grand slam of darts are up for renewal and the bbc are after it

    Afternoon session results;

    Prins 1 Walton 3.
    Van De Wiel 3 Soutar 1.
    Barilli 0 Phillips 3.
    Montgomery 1 Norris 3.

    The Montgomery v Norris game was a quality game and the best of the day IMO. I backed Norris @ 15/8 with Boylesports to win so happy days:D. Van De Wiel v Soutar was another quality game with outstanding finishing by Van De Wiel the highlight of the game. Prins v Walton was a poor game and Barilli never turned up against Phillips making it all too easy for Phillips who still threw very well.

    This is the second year on the trot that Montgomery has gone out in the first round despite being seeded high.

    He missed far too many doubles today and was punished every time by Norris.The 2nd set was the turning point in the match,at 1-1 in legs and Montgomery with the throw he had 56 left and hit the single 16 only to miss 2 darts at double top. In stepped Norris T20 T20 D12!

    I'm not sorry to see Montgomery gone after his antics in the Northern Ireland Open 2 months ago where he tried to get a player thrown out of the tournament.

    Martin Adams is in a bit of trouble.1 set down and 2 legs down

    West has thrown this 1 away! Adams 2 sets to 1 up now but he can count himself very lucky,West threw away the 2nd set. Sadly it looks like an Adams win coming up here:(.

    Evening session results;

    Adams 3 Tony West 1.
    Gary Robson 3 Steve Douglas 0.

    Gary Robson done a 170 finish in his game!

    There's live coverage of the darts today on BBC 2 from 1 00pm to 4 45pm and again at 5 30pm to 6 50pm. Coverage on the red button starts at 1 00pm and runs straight through till 11 00pm. Here is a schedule of today's matches;

    1 00pm Steve West v Dave Chisnall.
    1 50pm Tony O'Shea v Ross Smith.
    2 40pm Joey Ten Berge v Shaun Griffiths.
    3 30pm Garry Thompson v Arno Merk.
    5 30pm Stuart Kellett v Darryl Fitton.
    6 20pm Scott Mitchell v Jan Dekker.

    The closest match of the afternoon session should be Ten Berge v Griffiths. Griffiths is sponsored by none other than Sky Sports darts commentator John Gwynne! Fitton will be up against it in the evening session against Kellett while Mitchell v Dekker should be another close game.

    No Irish representatives this year. Last year there was Daryl Gurney and Martin McCloskey but both failed to make it this year.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,328 ✭✭✭dartbhoy

    Results so far today;

    Steve West 2 Dave Chisnall 3.
    Tony O'Shea 1 Ross Smith 3.
    Joey Ten Berge 3 Shaun Griffiths 0.

    A huge shock O'Shea is gone out. He never got going in the game and missed far too many doubles at crucial times. Chisnall very lucky to be still in the tournament,Steve West missed 3 darts at tops to win the match!

    Ten Berge's 3-0 win flattered him a bit,young Griffiths missed darts to win the 2nd and 3rd sets,nerves got the better of him but I'm sure we'll see this player on TV again quite soon. Good to see his sponsor John Gwynne at Lakeside enjoying the darts and been acknowledged by the BBC commentary team.

    Good point about the BDO players. Look at Webster.

    However I think the BBC do not have the cash ?

    The problem with the BBC is that It can't devote much time to showing darts on it's mainstream channels so your left with most games been shown on the red button so I don't think it's a cash problem.Personally I don't think the PDC will get involved with BBC unless they get assurances of live coverage on the mainstream channels.

    I've been impressed so far with the coverage on BBC,the new co-commentator with David Croft has been good and there's more interviews with the players and previews of the games ahead. Overall a good effort by the BBC but I don't think darts will ever be high up as a viewing priority in the BBC sports department.

    Rest of the results from the day;

    Garry Thompson 3 Arno Merk 1.
    Stuart Kellett 3 Daryll Fitton 0.
    Scott Mitchell 0 Jan Dekker 3.

    Kellet very impressive in his win over Fitton finishing the game with a 94.35 average and only conceding 1 leg in the game. The other 2 games were dour affairs!

    No because players like O Shea, Adams, Hankey, Fitton would oppose it and the BDO don't want it. Barry Hearn tried to take it over last year but the BDO refused the offer and now Barry Hearn is setting up all the good things the BDO had over the PDC (ie county darts, youths and womens tournaments) to kill the BDO.

    Those ive highlighted are all rumoured to be moving to the PDC this year so they wont be opposing anything.

    Adams is a total wanker anyway, they dont want him

    O Shea and Fitton have gone out in the First round and Hankey will probably join them since he does have to play Waites. A bit strange if they move over but you can never tell since alot of the players that have moved over have done really well. 2 are in the PDC Semis tonight.

    The venue is the sponsor of the tournament. When embassy pulled out over tobacco advertising Lakeside stepped in a took over as nobody else would.

    Lakeside make an absolute fortune this week from the darts.

    Not a great set of matches really.disappointed in fitton.a long way from the player he threatened to become in 2005.something tells me he is in decline.hope im wrong.kellett was good to be fair though.a major threat now and fitton as poor as he is is still a tough test for a newcomer.

    tony o shea was awful but im not too surpised.hes well overrated if you ask me.his scoring power isnt good enough to threaten the better players and was fortunate in his run 2 years ago.similar to mardle in so far as character masks some shortcomings in his game.dont know if hell move to the pdc but Id say his bdo race is run now.

    Scott mitchell was a major disappointment.a good scorer at times but didnt show it and his doubles were woeful.its not that he had the toughest of draws either.

    felt sorry for griffiths but at the same time was pleased for ten berge.felt he was due a breakthrough and now he has gotten past the first round could be a handful later on.plays a lot of the tour events and deserved a break.

    not a great start overall though and a look through the players left wouldnt inspire confidence for the rest of the tournament.

    gurney and mccloskey are badly missed this year.

    Today's live coverage starts at 1 00pm-4 30pm with live evening coverage starting at 7 00pm-8 00pm on BBC2. For those with the red button coverage starts at 1 00pm and continues till 11 00pm tonight. Here is a full schedule of today's games;

    1 00pm Dean Winstanley v Martin Atkins.
    1 50pm Brian Woods v Stephen Bunting.
    2 40pm Scott Waites v Ted Hankey.
    3 30pm Robbie Green v Andy Boulton.

    2nd round games (best of 7 sets)

    7 00pm John Walton v Martin Adams
    8 15pm Willy Van De Wiel v Ross Smith

    The game of the day has to be Waites v Hankey,I fancy this game to go the distance. Hard to see Walton upsetting Adams in the evening session but with Walton you never know he has been known to come up with brilliant darts when least expected! I hope my tip Robbie Green gets off to a good start,hopefully a 3-0 win and a good 90+ average for him to start off with.
