Who's gonna be watching it tonight?

McCoy's the huge favourite but McDowell would also be a very worthy winner.

It's about time someone from this island won it TBH - Barry McGuigan being the last to do so, all the way back in 1985. Of course, Darren Clarke would have easily won in 2006 had the shortlist not included any members of the House of Windsor...

Haven't paid much attention to this, can't see McDowell winning it, if not for the worst accent ever to utter a word then because isn't the current world's number 1 golfer English

I'm not the only one watching, am I?

Anyway, we start with the Ryder Cup - and no real surprise that McDowell, Westwood, Monty and co were welcomed on by Katherine Jenkins.

Good to see Ballesteros again as well.

OK, on a different thread. Do you think it has got a bit overblown in recent years?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,286 ✭✭✭ankles

Good. Diving out the way good and early

Is McCoy favorite, or is that just amongst people who know about horses?

Nobody really stands out I'd say, but the fact that Beckham is getting a lifetime award suggests it's a bit of a rubbish year.

If the cricket had been going better last night then Swan would probably have been a good bet.

Well, these days they do seem to focus more on the actual personalities of the contenders and less on the actual sporting achievements...

This could explain why Lewis Hamilton lost out to Chris Hoy in 2008 - despite the dramatic manner in which he won the F1 World Championship...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,286 ✭✭✭ankles

Hmmm. AP McCoy is hardly the life and soul...

    McCoy's odds-on to win it.

And I actually don't disagree it's been a bit of a rubbish year - look at how bad England were at the World Cup, for instance...

Golf is way ahead of the rest of the sports. GMac might have a chance. The boys love Westwood though

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,038 ✭✭✭Go Harvey Go

So Sir Frank Williams picks up the Helen Rollason award.

And fire accompanies Mark Cavendish's entrance - now that's definitely a bit OTT.

I think I'd spend my 15p on Cavendish...

    ...actually, forget that.

    jessica-ennis-pic-getty-99449219.jpg

    Vote Ennis.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 35,514 ✭✭✭✭efb

Gmac or McCoy, will they split the Norn Iron vote and some other Douche get in?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,038 ✭✭✭Go Harvey Go

I like Jessica Ennis, I've got to admit - but I'm still going for AP or GMac.

And who would have thought Clarky was an Amy Williams fan...

'Personality'???? meaning who has the best personality?!........why isn't it called Sports 'Person' implying best achieving person?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,038 ✭✭✭Go Harvey Go

AAAGH! I just KNEW they'd play "Pack Up".

    I HATE THAT SONG!

I do prefer Eliza Doolittle to C****l C**e, though...

No surprise about Tom Daley winning the Young Sports Personality award.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,286 ✭✭✭ankles

Hopefully that's Daley out of the main event ( not that he had a hope anyway)

Can't see him getting the main event, but with the coverage he's getting over the last few years if he bags a couple of medals in 2012 he could be on for it then. Assuming nobody else wins anything that year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,286 ✭✭✭ankles

Which would be a pretty bad year, Olympics-wise...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,286 ✭✭✭ankles

Have never seen the point of this unsung hero bit.. Don't they have honours for this sort of stuff?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,286 ✭✭✭ankles

Hah, darts! Been waiting for this.:D

You know it's bad when darts makes the short list. :(

Robbie Williams: "It's a travesty of justice that Phil Taylor hasn't been Sports Personality."

Well, Rob, I can't see him winning it this year... :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,038 ✭✭✭Go Harvey Go

    Oh, here's James Corden again...

And Becks has brought along the whole nuclear family.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,286 ✭✭✭ankles

    Oh my god, this idiot...

It's a completely different show these days. I used to really look forward to it as a kid. They would give proper run downs of all major sports covering what happened in a lot more detail than these days. It's a very shallow experience now.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,038 ✭✭✭Go Harvey Go

The Ryder Cup heroes take the Team of the Year award - no surprises there.

And David Ginola's hair is a lot shorter (and greyer) these days, isn't it? :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,286 ✭✭✭ankles

played one, won one. Not much of a record:D

Phil Taylor has to win. He is the worlds most dominant sportsman.

hope Jessica Ennis wins but she probably won't, but i can't believe Chrissie Wellington hasn't been nominated, she's absolutely phenomenal as a long distance triathlete, none of the other women have been able to get near her! she has been breaking records left, right and centre, the way the won Challenge Roth in Germany was incredible, beating many pro men on the day, her time of 8hrs 19mins was some 31mins clear of the next finishing woman...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,038 ✭✭✭Go Harvey Go

First Jeremy Clarkson is an Amy Williams fan, then Robbie Williams is a Power fan - now Chris Evans is a Westwood fan...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,038 ✭✭✭Go Harvey Go

Rafael Nadal gets the Overseas Personality award - once again, no surprises there.

After the year he's had, it's almost certainly a question of when, rather than if, he overtakes Federer as the greatest ever...

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,144 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

There was something on Dave recently, obviously a repeat though, where Clarckson was stuck in a bobsleigh. Scared the crap out of him.

That probably accounts for him respecting the sliding at speed down a sheet of ice.

When are they announcing the main award, does anybody know?

In just over ten minutes' time.

Here's Becks getting the Lifetime Achievement award - and some encouraging words from the soon-to-be Mr Kate Middleton...

HRH should stop reading from the script, it sounds horrible.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 9,035 Mod ✭✭✭✭mewso

Ah so thats why David Beckham attended.

Assuming none of that applause was canned, that was quite a reception.

And no surprise that Victoria, Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz are getting quite a few shots...

Er, David? You do remember you were Sports Personality in 2001, don't you?

Oh, now you're thanking the family...

AP it is. One for the bookies.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,038 ✭✭✭Go Harvey Go

    GET IN AP!!!!! :D:):D:)

Well, I did say he was odds-on...

Taylor coming second is a massive surprise, though.
