Fitting New Battery - Problems

New battery is slightly too big for the battery tray due to a rim round the base of it, which old one didn't have.

Was thinking of cutting off one side of the tray to allow battery sit flat.

Top clamp (see below) is slightly too small and brackets are welded in place. Not sure how to get round this bar finding someone with a welding gear. Any suggestions lads.

    I'd change the battery.

Not the right battery for the car, bring it back with the old one and have it exchanged. No point cannibalising the tray as what happens next time you change the battery?

The old one OE was 10yrs old and the same make (GS) as this one. It looks perfect size wise except it is ever so slightly to wide.

Is it reasonable to expect to get a perfect fit battery for a 10yr old car?

Totally reasonable to expect to find one that fits. Take the 3 digit number from the old one and replace with the same.

If you cant get the same one, you will be able to get one slightly smaller which will still do the job perfectly.

I think it's completely reasonable, and it's what i'd do. You really don't want to start cutting into your battery tray.

The is the 2nd New battery I got today, the first one was way off the mark even though he looked up the catelogue.

Brought the old one down this time and got the battery you see above and gave the old one to him.

I'm stuck with him now...just hope I'm not been messed around. Will go back Monday and see what he says. :(

If its not a tasty car, given your situation, I would make it fit. If the tray would still be strong enough and if you could still secure the battery, Id cut it.
Having said that, if it was something I had a liking for & not an avensis or some such bland yoke, I would change the battery

Had a closer look at the top bracket and the battery is about 1/2" oversize.. so deffo bringing it back.

I'm worried I might not get the correct battery specks to suit my car. My handbook only says. 12v 36AH.

The only thing that is made clear on the two batteries I've had today is the amp hour (AH)

Should I refuse anyting less than 36AH and accept anyting greater than this

36AH is 36 Amp Hours, 12V is what the car runs on. Get the correct battery for the car. What car is it and I can advise you what is listed for it.

3rd time lucky in the end.... Storemen is right mad.gif used to be one myself in the motor trade for 11yrs... but this guy had an attitude that if it looks half right..it must bebiggrin.gif

Anyway have a GS battery which is the same brand as the original which lasted 10yrs. Think the AH is about 45, where my handbooks specks says 36AH, Seems a perfect fit like the original and so far its doing the job.

thanks Oldman M... btw the car is a Mazda Demio 1.3, year 1999. biggrin.gif
