2010 Audi A4 won't start

The Dad is driving a 2010 Audi A4 2.0Tdi, bought it in June, tried to start it this morning and the engine is dead. Any advice on how he might get it started? I know the weather is cold but it's a new car with only 5000km on the clock.

Is it turning over the engine at all ?

Its not just the cold. Something has obviously failed or else something has been left on all night to drain the battery. That is quite hard to do with a modern car although indicator switch set to either side would leave a light on all night. The car will have full rescue service attached to it. Ring them up.

Could be (A) the battery, or (B) diesel has Jellified due to the cold:

Battery's don't work well when they get cold (the generate current through a chemical reaction, and cold is the enemy of chemical reactions), and Diesel engines require more power to start them as far as I am aware.

Certain diesel fuel constituents turn to jelly at temperatures below freezing. They then tend to clog the fuel filter and stop fuel flowing.

Try charging the battery or jump starting the car. If it still dosen't work you may need to get the fuel filter changed.

I have a Passat 1.9tdi and had a similar problem; it was just the battery in my case; plugged in a charger and after a few hours it was fine (during the cold snap a couple of weeks ago - has been fine ever since).

Out of interest, I have heard of jellifying but haven't experienced it myself - what sort of temperatures would we need to have in order for it to happen ?

Hi guys, op here, there is nothing coming when he turns the ignition so it could well be the battery. He is going to get jump leads and try starting it that way. Thanks for the quick replies.

It's a 2010 car, it's Audi's problem. Call breakdown assist and don't attempt to jump start it yourself.

Are you getting the lights on the dash when you insert the key?

If he's been driving it for a while, he'll definatley have his foot on the clutch won't he?

OP here, he got it started in the afternoon but he didn't use jump leads. He waited for the temperature to rise and it started. Thanks for all the advice especially regarding the jump leads. As one of you said it's Audi's problem, let them sort it out.

I think you could be on the money there.
Ive seen this happen before to a woman after months of driving a passat & it happened to be outside house too when she was starting the car just to warm it up. She just sat on drivers seat with feet still outside the car and tried to start it and couldnt work out what was up.

When Manufactuers started doing this I was stood at the drivers window of a brand new 320d trying to trouble shoot why it wouldn't start for him.

He had no joy, so jumped out, I jumped in and it started no problem. Luckily he'd been watching and figured out I'd had my foot on the clutch (always do so second nature) whereas he hadn't. That sorted that out.

The car came with 2 years of AUDI ASSIST. Don't jumpstart something this new when you don't need to. Audi A will be out to you in 24hr's and any damage done will be covered. You zap the car and its your problem costwise.

Most new cars want/need you to put your foot on the clutch pedal or brake or both as an anti-child protection. There have been incidents of children starting cars and the car moves and crashes (people leaving car in gear with handbrake off or partially on). So they are covering there arse's as most children won't be able to push down clutch and start the car at the same time.
