Who Will Remove My Braces

    Hi Guys
    this is a strange one
I have my braces on the last 3 years and until about a year ago I was visiting a HSE orthodontist in Mullingar.
He then moved to Tullamore and the number I have for him won't work.
I've even had my mam trying to contact the HSE to get his number as I want the braces removed and done privately as I'm not happy with the work done by the HSE.
I am blue in the face calling around places that downright refuse to remove my brace as they won't touch anyone elses work.
Does anyone know any place that will remove these, I am willing to travel as far as I need to to get them off!!
I am so frustrated at this stage and don't know what to do :(

    Hi,

As far as I know the HSE Orthodontic Service for that region is based in Portlaoise - give the orthodontic clinic there a call at 057 692738 / 057 692739 and explain the situation. If you don't want to see your original orthodontist they should be able to arrange for another of their orthodontists to remove your appliances for you.

If you prefer to have your new (private) orthodontist remove the braces before fitting your new ones, ask him / her to write to the HSE orthodontist to request a transfer letter outlining your case and treatment to date, together with any relevant records, xrays etc.

You should be aware that once you transfer to a private orthodontist you would no longer be eligible for any further orthodontic treatment with the HSE. There are at least 2 excellent orthodontists that I know of who work in the HSE in that area (part-time - both also have private practices) so it might be worth requesting to be transferred to another orthodontist in the HSE service rather than going down the private route at this stage.

However, if there are any other issues (for example if you had missed a load of scheduled appointments you would be discharged from the care of the HSE service, and would have received a letter warning you of this) that would change things a bit. Even then though, the HSE should be willing to remove the appliances for you, as braces left on for long periods of time without supervision can unfortunately lead to permanent damage to the teeth and supporting tissues.

    Best of luck
