Buying Washing Machines

In 10 years we have had 2 washing machines 1 hotpoint and 1 whirlpool. Neither have been dead but performance noticably degrades the older they get.

When buying a new washing machine, is it a case of buy whatever brand as they will all last about 5 years or is it a case of you get what you pay for? Different people have said they are all the same and you will get the same service whatever you buy.

    opinoins please.

You get what you pay for. Buy a Miele, you won't regret it.

Not true. For much cheaper Bosch is as good.

Have no experience of Miele, but a lot of other posters here think that they are very over-priced...

Whichever machine you buy, take the time to read the manual!

If you look after the machine then it will give you long years of trouble free operation.
Really simple things like, ensuring pockets are empty, buttons and fasteners are not going to come off, put small items like baby's socks and stuff inside a pillow-case,don't overload it, etc...
Every 2 or 3 months, have a look at the filter and clean it out.

Personally, we have Siemens appliances,(which are virtually the same as Bosch and Neff ) and I couldn't recommend them enough, so best thing to say really is, buy whatever you can afford and if you look after if, it will look after you.

Do you really need to read the manual to figure that out?

You would be surprised by the amount of people who think the machine only does 1 type of wash or that it is only made to last 4 or 5 years....

Maybe if you had something constructive to add to the thread, it would be appreciated. ;)

Miele all the way. Went camping in Devon in 2005 and in the campsite they had Miele washing machines and driers all over 20 years old. Not a bit of bother said the owner. We bought one when we came home. It still is like new and washes great. Honeycomb drum, cast iron frame - no concrete business so less vibration, car wheel axle and direct drive. Expensive but well worth it. you spend enough on clothes. they deserve to be looked after!

The performance shouldn't really change unless it's faulty as there's nothing to degrade in the machine really that will affect how it washes.

    Try cleaning the machine out.

    1) Clean the filter out and give the drawer a good clean out with a cloth.
    2) Buy a washing machine descaler (not the stuff to prevent limescale, but the stuff to actually dissolve build up). Larger Tescos sell it. Just follow the instructions and run a 90°C wash.
    3) Try to run a very hot wash 90ºC at least once every couple of months. This dissolves up gunk and also kills bacteria and fungus that can grow in the drum clogging it up.
    4) Try using a different washing powder. Some of them aren't great.
