Do I need to get oil tank changed or cleaned?

We're switching our central heating from MGO to kerosene.

The guy who removed the remaining MGO from the tank said there was a lot of gunk at the bottom (even though the tank's only a few years old) and that we should get a new tank, or at least get it cleaned, before it's filled with kerosene.

Is he right? Are they difficult or costly to clean?

You would probably need to remove filter and flush out with a few gallons of kero and when its up and running get filter cleaned maybe once or twice a month or even sooner. Any sediment or dirt will settle on bottom anyway.
I'm not sure what you do with the dirty kero. Your local recycling or council might advise you, they normally take waste oil.

Depends on how much sludge is in the bottom of the tank. All tanks have sludge in them and accumulate over time. Thats why the outlet isn't on the very bottom of the tank.

When you get a fill of kero, leave it for a day to settle before you use it and it'll stop the sluge passing up the line.

Yeah, the gunk will block up the oil pump

cleaning is hard to do as your left with the worry of water being left in it, theres always gunk in the tank no matter what fuel is used.

    2 options really

    1) be super safe and get a new tank

    2) fill old tank up and leave it to settle for a day before opening the valve, also maybe fit a new oil filter, if possible to be on the safe side fit one at the tank and one at the boiler. oil filter should pick up any gunk before it hits the oil pump.
