I went to B&Q looking for a snow shovel for the coming bad weather and was told they had just sold out. Out of interest i asked how much.. €15 i was told.
decided to go to Smyths in Dublin 12.
They wanted €35 for a dam shovel and what was worse was that the guy at the counter had a stupid grin on his face as he told me-knowing he was shafting me.
didnt give him the money BTW!

did you ever notice that in b&q, woodies etc you can get a garden spade for €10, €20, €30 and possibly €40.

B&Q sell all qualities of tool, a specialist place like smyths will only see decent stuff - as otherwise the builders who are their main customers would never return.

So unless you know for sure that both qualities were the same - then its unfair and rather ridiculous to compare.

btw €35 for a decent shovel is actually quite reasonable.

I picked up the snow shovel in B & Q in newry this morning for £8 (plastic and v light aluminium),its ok wont last a lifetime in fact it may just last the winter,
Most of the "snow" shovels in proper providers are in fact mucking out shovels and could possibly last many years......you get what you pay for.

I bought attic insulation 2 years ago in Homebase @ €9 per roll, which was on special offer in the January sales. I rang inquiring about more last week, and they were charging €40 per roll for the same stuff.
Suppliers are demanding a lot of €€

Homebase are always expensive for building/plumbing supplies.
I went up to them to get pipe insulation a few weeks back and they were charging €11.49 for a pack of 3 metre long insulation.
Went down to Woodies and they were selling the same insulation at 99c per metre.

As a general rule I try to buy from Irish companies - any UK companies have UK policies regarding pricing and use set exchange rates. Irish companies can buy from wherever they want and set their own pricing structure.
