leasing a pub

    I am looking to lease a pub in westmeath but would be looking to stay in the background, where would be the best place to find someone to go in with me on it and run it? could this work and would it be a good idea aside from the current climate? many thanks...

    Overthenest, I have a Hotel/Catering background & I have seen alot of these business come & unfortunately go. I strongly advise you to think long & hard before you consider this business.
    Many bar owners think it is possible to own/run a Bar & 'stay in the background', you must be 'there' & 'seen to be there' it is that kind of business so long hours.
    You will find it impossible to get credit terms with a leased premises so cash flow problems esp initally.
    Bars are closing, this is not just due to the downturn, its due to a cultural change first noticed by Guinness in 1998 (i.e. on trade volumes began to slip).

    A pub can only be a good "background" business if you've got a ver competent, loyal and honest manager. And you'll only get this by paying extremely good wages, or offering a share in the business. I knew a guy who owned a pub close to me who never worked in it, but sat on the same stool from 6pm to closing every night, while drinking coffee and chatting to the punters. He only ever moved to use the toilet. Hands off management can really only be done in an ultra busy location.

    The pub business is very much like the c-store business in that it needs somebody with a strong vested interest to drive it forward all the time. Most managers just don't have that interest.
