What do you mean by get by??

If you had a 100 acre farm and kept 50 sucklers, its possible that you could have an income of €20k per year including EU Grants. But you'd need to be well clued in.

The RSPCA would end up taking me to court if I was left in charge of 50 animals :p

Dont the EU give grants even if you werent doing anything with the farm?

As Reilg, it depends on what you mean. How much money do you need to "get by"?

If you walked into a farm tomorrow, and just wanted to make money on grants, as far as I know the various grants are
Agri Environment Options Scheme - no size of farm dependant (as far as I know) but there is a max limit set of 5k (but am open to correction on that)
Single Farm Payment - This is dependant on what level of farming was done in the reference years. So its not something you apply for as such.
Disadvantaged Area - This is location dependant and also level of farming dependant in the reference years (I think, not in it, so dont really know)

But even the AEOS has lots of conditions around it, and you might not be accepted.

Anyways, I would say the answer to your question is No.

Thats it lads - the games up - we've been caught out.
The secret is out that we havent really been killing ourselves trying to make a few quid, and the EU is giving us loadsa money, for sitting on our arses... :D

Unfortunately No, the EU doesnt give out money like that.

It sounds like you may have access to a farm - my advice - let it. ;)

In fairness the thread is only an hour old... If a mod could just delete it and perm ban OP from boards there would probably be another 20 years of living off the EU before anyone else figured out the good life... we even get our money transferred to Costa-Cavan, it goes so much further here

if you apply your land for FEPS you could make a bit of cash over 15years.

but you have to be a farmer to make big bucks...

example... 25acres could pull 8000euro.. in FEPS as a farmer..

25acres as an investor in FEPS only gets you 2100euro

theres a cap on there after a certain amount of land...

if you go for REPS unuseable land for agri purposes... 150acres gets you 17,000euro per annum...

    this figures arent accurate..

but you get nothing for nothing... alot of paper work and alot of hassle ...

    goodluck

    A few questions.
What sort of farm is it? Did the previous owner keep animals or grow crops? Were they in receipt of any grants like single farm payment? And did these entitlements get transfered with the land?

These questions will affect what sort of grants you may be able to get. But as Username John said, if you have a farm and don't know much about farming, your best bet is to rent it out to someone else.

If there are entitlements with the land, the person is letting it will be able to activate them (this should improve the amount of rent you get) and there is a better chance of them being kept on after the review in 2013.

Good reply. Balanced and informative. You probably shouldnt post here for a while because unless you go in studs showing you will find yourself posting to yourself:o. You restore my hope for this forum somewhat. Many thanks;)

Thanks Upstream and Blueburd and the other non-hysterical posters, thats what I wanted to know, I do realise there is a lot of work involved in running a farm, I wasnt making any accusations or anything.

    Sorry reactor,
I went a bit over the top there, sometimes we get anti-farmer types on here trying to stir things up, and I thought your post was one.

Thanks 5live, just glad you haven't seen me playing football though, I wouldn't go in studs showing but my style of tackling can be fairly "enthusiastic" :D In fairness I think they're a good bunch on here. Always learn something when I comes here.

I think on this forum that style of tackling is called 'agricultural':D. And I agree about the posters. Always helpful bar a few trolls but such is life

reality is farm income surveys repeatedly show most farmers only net income from their farm enterprise is what they make from grants. In other words the guys who know quite a bit about farming are making no money from their actual farming activities.
You might qualify for SPS entitlements from the national reserve, get into the new AEOS (no details out yet) and get the disadvantaged area payment, (depends on where you are located). If this works out then the less active farming you do the better. Alternative options are to plant forestry on the whole lot(tax free income) or as a previous poster said just set the place (possibly tax free) and make sure the tenant pays upfront each year. Best of luck anyway.

How would I find out about entitlements? I inherited my dads farm and it has been leased out for the past number of years. I can't seem to get any info on what entitlements there might have been. I know my father received area aid for some a small part of the farm. I was too young to know what was going on back then but I'm looking into taking over the farm again as I want to do something with it myself rather than rent all the time.

    Any suggestions?

The Dept should have details on any entitlements that go with the land or the bank will have details of any payments paid to your late fathers account. If there are no entitlements then you may be elegible for entitlements from the national reserve. I would say your first call would be the local dept of ag offices with some paperwork saying you are elegible to inquire into the farms elegibility. Sorry for your loss and welcome to wierd and wonderful world of agriculture:o

Thanks for that 5live. I'll try the Dept. I'm thinkin that whoever is renting the land could be claiming the entitlements but maybe thats not possible! I always wanted to get back to the outdoors. Up the Kingdom.
