What do people think of seperate car hire insurance?

I'm going to be renting a Corvette from Hertz in January for 14 days and the excess insurance SLi/CDW/LDW etc is nearly $500, where as I can get all this covered for about £90 from this company?

What do people think about these companies and has anyone ever used them?

    also see http://www.axa.ie/other/car-hire-excess.aspx

if you are renting a car anywhere for 14 days then this kind of insurance is a good deal. The only downside is that there will be hold on your credit card for whatever the excess is, and if there is a problem you'll have to wait for the third party insurer to pay up.

The other alternative is that if you book a vehicle through the likes of Holidayautos.ie or autoeurope.ie these will also sell similar excess insurance.

    Just to clarify...
You want to pay £90 for insurance which will cover the excees of $500 for 14 days?
    £90 is almost $140....
What is the chance you will crash?
It's only worth to pay that insurance if your chance to crash is more then 1 to 3.6...
Do you really think it's so likely that you'll crash?

Basic CDW/LDW should be covered in your rental agreement with Hertz, but they offer additional Liability covereage in the states.

Basic CDW covers you up to about $50,000 if you get sued after an accident. The additional liability covereage gives you either 1 or 2 million $ coverage.

Insurance rules vary from state to state, I seem to remember that an excess only applied in a couple of states and apart from that there was no excess - but it's been about 10 years since I was there.

Give reservations a ring and ask them to run through the ins and outs of the excess's in whichever state you are hiring in, and the cost of the additional insurances. Hopefully you'll get one of the staff members who actually knows what they are talking about.
