Car for 10K mark

Ok....... Got a 03 Passat with 250K on the clock. She is about to cost me a lot of money with shocks / timing belt / siezed tracking arms..... The list goes on so in turn the car is going.

I need a car for around the 10K mark that is diesel, low maintenance, good economy and in a nice low tax brand (10K probably wont get me a 08 Low Carbon tax car)

I would like a car, estate maybe or a hatchback saloon job but just cant find a decent one for the price I can offer. I was looking at the Focus Car Van (could be low tax if Gormley doesnt push that Goods only crap through!) but hear mixed reviews on Fords. Looked at the Almera Car Van but another thread on Nissan has put me off that.

I do about 50K miles a year and just want something to get me there in comfort and not cost me the earth to run or maintain.

    Suggestions ?

I would rule Nissan out if your driving a Passat. What about a newer 1.9 Passat. Those Passats like what you are driving are a great car. You wont get a decent 08 for your budget.

To be honest. I love VW and the drive they give but they are just too expensive for parts and the newer model of the Passat doesnt seem to be too flawless !

Should be able to pick up a Skoda Octavia like this on your budget:

Pretty much the same engine as in your current Passat.

Op is there a point in changing the car and spending 10k, when you could potentially get the work done for a fraction of the cost, possibly up north? or how about the below?

its the cheapest current diesel mondeo on carzone.

If your not too pushed about cars (assuming your not since you were looking at a focus and almera) I'd pick up a skoda superb or octavia. They're supposedly now more reliable than parent VW group cars and 10 k should pull you a decent spec one. Or perhaps an audi a4 heres a nice example with low mileage and an auto box

shop around for the parts. i got quoted 50 euro for 5L of pd sped oil from my local dealer. got the oil + oil filter and air pollen and diesel filters for 60 euro delivered from a dealer in the north. if you put 1500 into your current car and got another two years driving out if it it would be a lot cheaper than changing cars. the passat is not worth a lot if you sell with all the stuff to be done +250k miles on it. stay driving it till it is a wreck..
    just my 2p worth

I wouldn't go near that car. These are the same guys who used to run McCarthy Motors in Cork before they liquidated. There is a thread here about them selling a crashed Mini convertible. My 2pence worth!
