hey can anyone recommend any history books about europe and ireland in the age of the great war, on ww1 in general and on 1916?
we were told we would need to look over them for next semester so looking for something that will provide a good deal of info that will last until the end of the semester.

    thanks :D

If it's the same thing as a couple of years ago (1BA history) then the required reading for the Easter Rising will probably still be "Easter 1916: The Irish Rebellion" by Charles Townshend.

Can't remember the required reading for WW1 though.

Last year, for the European section, the core recommended text was The Oxford Illustrated History of the British Empire by Huw Strachan.

Witnesses is also a good book for primary source material. Interesting stuff and has some info on womens role in the rising, e.g. helping keep gunmen topped up with ammo in one recollection.

+1 for Strachen for WWI, Townshend for 1916.
Two of them will see you through easily.
