If one partner in a couple doesn't work, can she claim rent allowance?

    Hi all

    Posting this for a friend. Don't know anything about state benefits (did a search) so I hope someone can answer this for her.

    My friend lives with her boyfriend. He works, she doesn't. She is on either JB or JA, not sure.

    Can she claim rent allowance?

    No she can't because she is means tested against her bf income.

    Thanks. Just confirmed she is on JB.

    Does the means test still apply? The BF has a fairly decent job, above average salary for sure.

    you say she is on jsb which is not means tested but with her bf earning good money she will not be entitled to rent allowance while they are living together, she will get jsb for 1 year then she will have to apply for jsa which is means tested against her bf wage and she will get very little money if his wage stays the same.
