Initial PS3 Set-up, Christmas Readiness

Ok so I now have a 320GB PS3, with the following 3 games GT5, FIFA 11, and F1 2010 sorted for the big day for my son.

Is there anything I need to do in advance in order for him to start playing out of the box so to speak. I don't want to be the dad on christmas morning spending 2hrs setting things up, installing updates, etc...

I am technically competent to a large degree, but just said I'd be safe, and ask the question to the experts. :)

    Let me know.

If you bought it recently I wouldn't say it'd be too bad. You might have an update here and there for the games and POSSIBLY the firmware but these are very user friendly (a case of connecting online and it saying "please download this update, press x to start" and letting it do it's job)

If you can stay away from online for the first while, everything SHOULD go smoothly but i'm not 100% because I don't know if any of those games require online verification etc.

Also, the first time you turn on a PS3, there's about 10 mins of setting the date, time, account names etc but its nothing difficult.

All in all, 15 mins after plugging it in, you should be having fun :)

    Hi Eddie,

He is a lucky boy getting all that for Crimbo... hope you got 2 controllers :D

I setup GT5 last Sat and was an hour before I was up and running; not sure on others but guessing they will need some updates too.

Regarding the console itself; likely out of the box you will need the latest system update so best get the box onto your broadband connection and as soon as it sees the Internet it will prompt to update. Once that's done just kick off the install of the games and they will go do their updates - then pop the disks back in their cases and wrap them up ;)

Oh.. check you have a HDMI cable; cannot remember if the PS3 comes with one. Don't bother with the expensive ones - they all do the same job.

Optionally... you could just plug it in on Christmas day and not connect it to broadband and the console/games will be none the wiser.

    Have fun!

    Paddy

    For you more like...:p

Setting up is fairly idiot proof tbh.

It will need to update to revision 3.55 in order to play online, straight forward.
From opening to playing online will take aout 30 mins.
This includes setting up, updating and making an online profile.

TBH the best thing to do is start up the system and insert each of the games. You will then get all the latest updates downloaded before he opens his gift.

You can also set up parental controls first thing if that is something you want.

Don't think it's a problem with the PS3 but the wii records when it was first started on the calendar, i had some explaining to do on Christmas morning.

HDMI cables are digital so the signal is all ways the same and as said above you don't need an expensive one but those very cheap fat black cables don't work so well, just because you can get a €5 or less cable does not me you should get one, a €10-15 from some good shop even if you don't need to speed that much extra it's less likely to cause less problems such as lines across the screen or a slight screen discolouration.
