are there any signs that a clutch is about to go, in the last few days going into gears has got a bit harder. For each gear the gear stick goes half way, then there's a bit of resistance and with a a bit of preasure it goes into gear. No noise or clicks or jumps or anything like that.
Could it be a gear box or clutch on the way out. Car is a '99 diesel focus with 115k miles

Clutch will slip a bit before giving up the ghost.

Gearbox doom sounds closer to your symptoms. Is there oil in it?

Get it up on a lift (it has to be level) and undo the "fill" nut on the gearbox. If you can see oil just at the hole, there's oil in it.

Might be an idea to replace the GB oil anyway.

Cable or hydraulically operated? I cba to look it up.
If cable, possibly the cable's stretched or could do with adjustment or is entirely on its way out. If hydraulic, the seals might be needing replaced, or the entire master/slave cylinder.
In either scenario, the wear and tear would cause lost motion, so you don't get full clutch disengagement and the gears drag in/out when changing. Worth a check first, before resigning yourself to a new clutch, which (depending on your driving nous) might last another 100K yet. I've also known some folk kill a clutch in less than 30K, so whatever.

Pressing down the clutch how does it feel? Does it get hard half way down or is it hard the whole way? It should be hard most of the way down. If not, if it only starts to feel hard roughly half way down then the release bearing could be leaking fluid. This could cause hard selecting of gears. I have never heard of one of them gearboxes fail.

Old (or missing) gearbox oil + cold ...that would also do it

Looking for a diesel focus in need of repair myself. If you decide it's not worth fixing drop us a PM.

Hydraulic self bleeding clutch in those. Sounds like cold/ lack of oil or else either master or slave not operating to full potential. If it's slave gone or slave leaking you will need a clutch replacement most likely. Try get it seen ASAP as if it's master cylinder your clutch will survive.

To check oil remove plastic cover on box where selector cables are. There's an Allen key fill point, look in there!!

martyc5674, wont be getting rid of it anytime soon, fingers crossed! Unless it packs in on me. It might be cold oil as it happened on a very short journey. Might get someone to have a look anyway incase it is oil level.
