Taxing a car

Just wondering, could you tax a car by just constantly paying the previous months arrears. The minimum length of time that you can tax a car for is 3 months, ie. a quarter, which is paid in advance. However, arrears can be paid to cover the previous month just elapsed. I know you would always be driving without current tax, but you would always be in a position to produce it, within a reasonable time frame. Given that you usually have 10, or 14 days to produce it, being stopped any time after the middle of the month is a no brainer. Besides that, the guards dont usually make a big issue of tax that is only expired within the previous fortnight. I know you are issued with a receipt when you pay arears, as opposed to a tax disc for the period in question, but could you reasonably ask for and expect a disc, thus avoiding the "failure to display a current tax disc" law. The point behind this exercise is to avoid paying out up to 400 euro + in advance, for some bigger engined cars, per quarter. Instead you pay out 100 euro + retrospectively, per month elapsed.

It might also be an effective snub to our government, by not handing them wads of cash, in advance.........but thats another story.

Crazy notion perhaps, but that never stopped the government!

I don't really see the point of it and I'm one of those paying high.

And if you get a Garda in a "bad mood" he can still fine you for having no tax, plus the idea of another bill and another queue every month......

Or you could sell the car to your parent and buy it back the next week, thus only being liable for taxes from next week on.

Part of the point of it, as stated, is to pay tax at a monthly rate, as opposed to having to fork out 4 times as much, in advance. I know the pitfalls etc. just a thought.........also like the government, not meant to be taken too seriously.

On a side note,i need to get tax for my car..is there anywhere online where i can pay for it..Its a bit of a pain going to the tax office and paying for it there?

When you pay the arrears I don't think you'd get a tax disc to cover the period, this means the disc in your car (if you'd have one at all) would be very out of date. I think this would make any garda who checked less like to give you time to produce your cert at a station, and in fact they could even seize the car.

Evidently you don't get motor-rax renewal notices or if you do you don't read them.

You should have got a tax notice, in it there is a code and a site...But only of it is privet, not for commercials.

This time is allowed to give you time to produce the tax certificate which was current at the time you were stopped, it is not there to give you time to get one if by some chance you were caught. If you produce a tax disc which was issued after you were detected (they have the issue date printed on them now) you could still be prosecuted for no tax at that time. There is no lee-way in the law which allows you to drive without tax.

Not a hope, you won't get a disc to cover arrears, the best you'll get is one for the current month+2. The 'failure to display' applies at the time of detection, no current disc on the windscreen when checked means you failed to display, even if you fully paid up or had the current one sitting in your glove compartment. Don't forget the Gardaí are not the only ones who can prosecute you for motor tax offences, traffic wardens and (I'm pretty sure) Revenue officers can too.

Arrears are charged at 112% the monthly rate, you'll be paying extra motor tax and risking regular fines, all of which go to the exchequer so it wouldn't be much of a snub. In addition the longer you continue the greater the chance of being caught. Crazy notion indeed.

It would be quicker and easier to read the notice than to come on boards, ask and wait for an answer.

God also invented google for these things to speed up your life.

Google does not give you the code that comes with the notice and not everyone will think of reading the whole thing just in case.

He saw the thread and asked a question, easy....

And it only works for privet not commercials

If they got as far as reading and knowing what the code was for, the question about the possibility of taxing online is redundant. Google would have led tto motortax.ie which contains all the infor anyone could want. :)

Do you not agree that chucking something out them expecting someone else to read it for you is a touch lazy ,no?

:) He may not have chucked out, just not read it, you know you get a peace of paper that says your tax is due and you say, yes I know and put it aside.

I know I've done it with stuff

No need for what? I supplied OP with the information needed and made an observation that you've just repeated. Why repeat it?
