Divorce and Money

Hypothetical scenario. Parents are getting a divorce, but still owe a lot of money on the mortgage. They have a young son, and neither of them earn very much money. Father has been spending lots of money of unsavoury things at the expense of his son's future education/welfare etc.

Having sought legal advice, father now refusing to make any significant financial contribution to mother regarding son's welfare after he leaves. If this happens, mother will be left with a large mortgage which she cannot afford and child to whom she cannot supply adequate social provisions.

Let's assume at this point rational discussion between the two parties is no longer a feasible or reliable option. What are the legal practicalities of forcing the father to make a reasonable contribution to the welfare of said child? Is this a complicated and/or expensive process?

    Thanks for the help.

Legal aid if you cannot afford to instruct a solicitor privately. Courts service if you cannot wait to be assigned a legal aid solicitor.

Maintenance order can be gotten. Prison in default
