my 2001 1.6 petrol passat has been giving me trouble lately.

my drive to work involves a lot of tricky uphill bends. when im in 3rd or 4th gear and im coming up to a bend, and i clutch to drop a gear, the revs will drop and the car will conk. sometimes the revs will drop but it wont conk.

Could the clutch be going in my car?

Or would it have anything to do with the battery,as this never happened in the summer.could having the lights, radio and heating on affect it?

Possible sensor failure, maybe MAF or even coil pack or even crank

sensor(the extreme cold effects them). Do you have an engine warning

    light flashing on the dash.

there is no warning light on the dash.its interesting its only been happening the last 5-6 weeks since the weather has turned bad.

Is the sensor expensive to replace?

It could be something as simple as cleaning the throttle body.Try cleaning this and see if it makes any difference.Do the revs rise and drop when the car is stationery?

i find it mainly happens when i clutch, the revs will just drop to 0 and conk.sometimes it will drop to about 200 but rise straight away, without conking.

ive noticed a few times when i start the engine, the revs will go to 1200,but if i give the accelarator a good tap thay will drop to normal.
