Metal gear solid 4 is a must, you'll get it on the cheap too.

    Then uncharted 1 & 2.

red dead redemption is a must have, fallout 3 and new vegas, fifa 11 or pro evo if you like soccer, metal gear solid 4 also.

You might as well make use of the Blu-ray player and watch Inception instead... It's a far better film!

Uncharted 1 & 2 obviously (Uncharted 1 was the reason I originally got my PS3, and it didn't disappoint!!!)
    Demon's Souls

I don't think recommending Demon's Soul to a guy getting back into gaming is much use. Ease yourself in a bit before getting an elitist hardcore rpg. Have some fun with NFS:Hot Pursuit or AC: Brotherhood first.

You could say the same kind of stuff about MGS4* or MW2/Black Ops** too in fairness

    * Not exactly the most welcoming game ever if you're not familiar with a decade+ of backstory!
** Yeah, a newbie to the series walking into an online game with people who've been playing non stop since launch will be HEAPS of fun!!

Demon's Souls may be bastard hard, but it is also incredibly rewarding unlike the travesty that was MGS4 (imho!)
Having said that, I wouldn't recommend it unless you can rent it first...:p

Look out for the platinum games and 2nd hand ones in xtravision.

If you're new to it you don't need to pay a premium for newer games - you've plenty of time to catch up!

I'm in a similar situation as yourself I think but about 6 months ahead so my own recommendations (with rough price I paid):

unchartered 2 platinum: about 16 euro
batman arkham asylum: about 15 euro
    dead space: fiver
    infamous: 15 euro
    prince of persia: fiver
    killzone 2: tenner or so
resistance fall of man : 7 euro

I've actually another 5 games here I have since the summer that I havent even opened yet: devil may cry 4, ferrari somethin or toher, red faction, wolfenstein all from 5 - 15 euro

Some serious entertainment value for money to be had, in terms of both quality and quantity. They're great yokes actually -the ps3- hope ya get as much much enjoyment out of it as I'm getting from mine!

OP, it really depends on your taste.

Do you love sports, Action, RPGs, Shooters....?

I'll give you my personal top 5 but give us a bit more info! :)

    1. Uncharted series
    2. Assassin's Creed series
    3. Red Dead Redemption
    4. Fallout series
    5. Modern Warfare 2

Again, I stress, these are my personal ones.

Cheap buys at around 5-15 euros especially in the used sections
    Uncharted 1
    Bio shock
    Orange box

Medium buys around or just over €20
    Uncharted 2
    Daemon souls (22 on zavvi)
    Modern warfare 4

    Newish titles around €40
    Assassins creed brotherhood

Should get you well on your way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,405 ✭✭✭gizmo

If you're going to get an Assassins Creed game (which you certainly should) then play the first one before touching the later ones. You won't know wtf is going on otherwise. :)

Good choice on the PS3, diffo looking like its going to have a better year out of the consoles in terms of exclusives and ****.

I'd suggest, as others have, to get stuck into all the classic platinum games. AC, Bioshock, GTA4, MGS4 (**** the haters.. its still a must buy for any MG fan) etc.

Defo God of War 3, Batman Arkham Asylum, Fifa 11, Heavy Rain, Uncharted 1 & 2, GTA IV, Assasins Creed 1 & 2. There aren't many good racing titles available except Gran Turismo Series.

F1 2010 is really good if you like racing games. Think Grid and dirt are good too. Im not a big racing fan tho.

inFamous: Like Grand Theft Auto, but you can shoot electricity at people, ride on trains, and basically be a superhero. It's the best ps3 exclusive for me, though most will peobably say uncharted 2 (I didn't like it.)

Fallout 3: One of the ebst games ever, you'll sink an insane amount of time into this one if you get into it. Set in a post-apocalyptic Washington DC, you have free reign to wander around doing quests, levelling up and just exploring.

Burnout Paradise: Loads of cars and tracks, really thrilling sense of speed and a whole city to drive around. Plus you can smash other cars off the track.

Batman: Arkham Asylum: Phenomenally good game, even if you don't like batman, it's brilliant. The combat is pitch perfect, the exploration s rewarding and the puzzles are challenging.

Super StreetFigher IV - If you were a street fighter fan, get it. If not, get it anyway, it's brilliant.

Just Cause 2 - if you like just messing about, blowing things up and generally causing mayhem, seriously recommend it. It's about as deep as a puddle, but a heap of fun while it lasts.

Think you'll get each of them for less than €20 as well.

DIRT is a decent enough racer. Grid is highly unreccomendable.

I donno, im just going from our clan forums. They all seemed to really enjoy grid.. maybe its a love or hate kind of game :)

Ah c'mon, that's very harsh. Sure, there is alot of long cut scenes in it, but there's a decent amount of gamelplay in it too, about as much as the other MGSs.

I'll stand by it as still the best ps3 game.

When I finally got to the end of yet another mind numbing 90 minute cutscene, I just couldn't be bothered playing any more of it knowing that the (only half decent) gameplay would be broken up again before I had a chance to get into the swing of it again...

Different strokes for different folks and all that, I just thought it was a bit ****...

    Congratulations OP, a fine purchase.

As a PS3 owner myself, I would advise on getting the following:

    Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
    Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
    God of War 3
    Metal Gear Solid 4
    Killzone 3

You should note that I mostly prefer single-player experiences over mulit-player, hence the list above, though U2 and KZ3 have fantastic MP modes. As the only game you reference is an action game, I left out titles like Gran Turismo 5 and Rock Band, but if you would like to expand your games list, I suggest starting there.

I would also suggest going onto the PSN and getting a few cheap titles like Super Stardust HD, Wipeout HD, Fat Princess and Flower.

If you have money [and time] left over, come back to us.

Even though there's already loads of suggestions and lots of opinions, it's all going to depend on what type of game you want to play.

The number one game I'd recommend is Batman: Arkham Asylum. It's got a well known character, simple to learn gameplay, it looks fantastic and even though it can be frantic at times, it goes at an easy enough pace that you can get used to the controller (which will be handy experience for future games too! :) ).

You may want to see what games you friend has that you can play with or against them online.

After that, it really depends. Some of my favourites are Uncharted and Uncharted 2, which have fantastic Indiana Jones-esque storylines and brilliant characters in it. They also look great and despite a few problems, are great fun to play.

Heavy Rain is an interesting game that I loved, but many hated. It plays out as a kind of interactive thriller but you can decide how the story goes.

I would avoid Metal Gear Solid 4 like the plague. Firstly, it's the 4th part of a series with a very convoluted storyline and you won't know what's going on. Secondly, there's a tiny amount of gameplay and loads of very long cutscenes that make little sense. It's a game for the fans only and will really make you hate consoles if you start off you PS3's life with this.

The PSN store should have loads of demos on it, so download a few different ones and decide what you enjoy playing there. It's not the easiest store to navigate, but you'll get by.

edit: oh, and I just saw above, God of War 3. The God of War games are real button mashers, but great fun to play. It's only downside is it absolutely kills your hands if you play it for a long period of time. I'm still afraid to go back to it. :( This is definitely a demo you should get and try.

Get all your games 2nd hand. There are some great games selling for near nothing atm.

Here are a few of my favourites:
    Dead Space
    Operation Flashpoint
    Fallout 3
    Assassins Creed 2
    - Don't bother with the first one
    Uncharted 2
    - Feels like a movie

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 439 ✭✭Lonesome Boatman

Thanks for the suggestions guys, ive made a list of games to get based on your suggestions.

    Uncharted 2 among theives
    Killzone 2
    Battlefield Bad Company
    GT5
    NFS Hot pursuit
    Fallout 3 and New Vegas
    Infamous
    God of war 3

I like combat type games mainly. ;)

Killzone 2 - Brilliant FPS, story and on-line.
Just got Battlefield Bad Company this week by accident (Thought it was BF:BC2:o)and its a hoot - blowing buildings up, driving tanks, golf Buggies(!!!), calling in air strikes and mortat attackes......It is a brilliant game.
God of War I&II - cheaper then one cheap game, and endless hours of toture for your fingers and thumbs. Interesting story. You can then play the visually beautiful, but not as good as a game GoWIII.
Formula 1 - With a wheel - Brilliant. Very little more satisfying than getting within 20 minutes of Michael Schumacher's lap records......:o

A quick question guys, what is the difference between a platinum game and a non platinum game?

Apart from the price obviously, as the platinum games seem to be cheaper. Im just wondering if there is a particular reason for this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,721 ✭✭✭Otacon

Platinum games are basically re-releases of older games [hence the lower price] that sold well when they were first released.

No difference in the gameplay or anything like that, just the box it comes in.

I just put in Heavy Rain and only have to wait A FULL HOUR before I can play due to a massive update. Worst thing about PS3 by miles, can they not work around this somehow, it's so annoying.

Maybe its your internet speed. Or is it the same for everyone?

I hope these updates aren't frequent.

Depends on the time of day tbh... PSN downloads are **** slow in the evenings

If a game has a hefty update I'd usually skip it and then do in a few minutes before work the next morning while I'm showering

It's 1.1 gigs, not long left now but still... Xbox updates are only ever a couple of megabytes.

Yeah, I never did figure out wtf the difference is size for patches between the PS3 and 360 is all about:confused:
Some games (burnout paradise for example) just download all the extra free stuff automatically on the PS3, whereas you have to manually do it on the 360.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 954 ✭✭✭PaddyBomb

That Heavy Rain patch adds Move support so that's why it's so big. Annoying if you have no intention of playing it with the Move.
