Looking for a big family car for under 10k.

    My checklist includes
    1. Economical
    2. Small Engine Size 1.6 max. Preferrably 1.4
    3. Big enough for 3 kids in the back, buggies in the boot etc etc.

I have been looking at the following:
    Seat Cordoba
    Opel Meriva
    Renault Scenic
    Nissan Note

Any other suggestions, reccommendations or help please?

Big Car & 1.4 engine usually dont come in the same package. 1.6 is probably the min you will get for a "big" family car. A Car for 3 kids across the back has been talked to death on this forum aswell so if you do a search you might get some suggestions on them threads aswell.

How new are you looking to go? Could sort your problem for nearly a tenth of that. 2000 Renault Megane, tested till 2012. Its my own runabout I had through college and i'm now living in the Netherlands so its been parked up for 4 or 5 months and the father wants it off his driveway. Quick service and she'd be 100%

Don't get hung up on the engine size - it might not make all that much difference to the road tax (see rates by engine size here). You might find that an engine that's too small for the car won't be any cheaper to run, and you will nearly definitely find that it's a pig to drive.

Post 2006 Megane 1.5dci Tourer would work a treat, it does for us.

    1.6 Hdi Peugeot 307 SW:

It has 3 actual seats in the back instead of the two seats plus a hump you get in almost any other car, but it's still a car, not an MPV. 2 removable seats in the boot, too.

If you hunt around you can find one with full leather, which is great for cleaning off spilled milk, yoghurt, melted lollipops and so on.

    A little over budget:

Lovely cars, a 2008 one is out of reach really without going down to 1.4 - thats what you want but with a full load it ain't gonna be going anywhere too quickly ;)

In reality a 1.9TDi is a better and I'd say more economical choice especially if you can up the budget enough to get a '08 to factor in the tax. Even in the new year prices will come down a bit. Case in point: I bought a 1.6 petrol Vectra recntly and even that engine is a little small for the car, and I'm getting a lot less fuel consumption than if I'd gone for a 1.9 Diesel and about the same as most people seem to be getting with a 1.8. petrol.

Ford Mondeo would be my recommendation. I doubt you will get a decent sized car with a 1.4L engine. The Mk 3 mondeo came with smallest engine size of 1.8L the Mk4 from 07+ came with a 1.6 L engine, see below examples. I am actually very surprised by the spec of these, i.e alot have sunroof multi function steering wheel etc. Having driven the Mk2 mondeo, I would have no hestitation in recommending them, I cant believe how reasonable they are!

Had one and can swear by it

    2008 - 1.4 tdi sport ( 80 brake horsepower )
    €104 road tax

    1. Economical >>> Miser comes to mind
    2. Small Engine Size 1.6 max. Preferrably 1.4 >> As above 1.4 tdi
    3. Big enough for 3 kids in the back, buggies in the boot etc etc>>>
Had 3 adults in the back several times. > No problem if a wee bit tight.

Went on holidays 2 years ago. 2 adults in the front> 2 Adults in back seat.> Boot was Jammed and this is a huge boot.. ( Fitted 2 adults in there no problem :D )
Pulled like a train all day and returned 52mpg average.

If you do go for one make sure it is the sport version ( 80 BHP ) the 70 apparently is dead compared to them. ;)

    >> 2007 one here

    In fact.
This guy bought this one afer drinig my one. He is delighted with it and I can confirm it was treated with full care.
    NEVER abused
It would be bought for your budget if you want me to refer you to the seller .

    2008 Cordoba 1.4tdi sport

+1 for the mondeo. I've a bog standard Mk3 1.8LX (petrol) hatch back. Lovely car to drive and a vast cabin and boot. You could get a nicely spec'ed one well within budget which would more than compensate for the higher tax.

this stupid hellbent notion of spening god knows how much more to save very little in tax, so you can drive around in something underpowered, and underspecced etc is a joke. If the road tax is cheap, that will usually be accounted for in the higher selling price. Im not talking about going out an buying a 3L or anything, but 1.8L or so is hardly a big engine! I would way prefer to drive a larger, more powerful better spec older car (06,07) than some joke of an 08+ car and pay through the nose, so I can save a little in tax and pay much more for the car for the priviledge.

I probably should have added that prior to the Cordoba I owed a 02 Mondeo 1.8 Zetec petrol that I purchased in 05, This car was as fresh as a daisy with 32k on the clock
By god did it love petrol.. Drank the stuff on short runs,

Mondeo cost me 30 euro per week around town for the driving i was doing.

Bought the Cordoba and did the same type of driving... 10 euro per week
So as you can see there are more savings to be made in fuel.. Plus the savings iun tax.. Plus you have a newer car with minimal mileage

OH I should also mention.. The Torque in the cordoba ...???? It would pull the mondeo sideways anyday ;)
