An 87-year-old woman, a Garda and a member of the Garda Reserve are being treated in hospital in Cork after the woman's house was set on fire this morning.
The alarm was raised at around 5am when smoke was seen coming from the woman's home at Murrough lane, off Blarney Street in the city.
Gardaí at Gurranabraher were alerted and Garda John O'Sullivan and Reserve Garda Peter Clifford broke down the front door of the woman's house.
They rescued the woman from her upstairs bedroom and all three were taken to the Mercy Hospital in the city where they are being treated for the effects of smoke inhalation.
The woman's house was substantially damaged by smoke.
Gardaí believe she was targeted in a case of mistaken identity.
Gardaí are appealing for people who were in the Blarney Street/Murrough Lane area between 4.30am and 5.15am to contact them at Gurranabraher Garda station.

Well done to the Gardai involved.

However this type of thread will get no interest on boards.ie

If the headline was "Two Gardai wait for Fire Service while woman burns" there would be a barage of Garda Bashing threads with the usual suspects :rolleyes: bringing up Donegal and Abbeylara and the recent student protests.

In fairness, I don't think bringing up the above point has any meaningful place in this thread. There will always be naysayers. Let them jog on I say. Don't give them the satisfaction of being mentioned in this forum!

Well done to the 2 members!

I'd be "bashing" anyone who stood aside to wait for the fire services to arrive if a life was in danger in the same circumstances as this, but that's for another discussion. Can't see how anyone can argue about Abbeylara, they gave him a chance and he didn't stop, he was firing shots at Gardai, he would have been shot on the first instance of such in most countries, I applaud the Gardai for giving him a chance, he was killed because there was no other solution.

Well done to both Gardai involved, hope both have a quick recovery.

I have to say well done to Both gardai involved this morning. I think extra praise is due to the Reservist here though.
One man takes the risk because it is part of his job, and the state will take care of him if he is injured.
The other takes the same risk, during his spare time, for no wage. I'm not even sure if the same protection is available to him in the event of an injury.
He could have been lying at home in his bed preparing for his normal day job, but he chose to give up his free time, for nothing but love of the job a garda does, and saves someones life in the process.

A huge well done to both men though, and Hope all, and the Victim of the fire, make a full recovery.

Why can't we have stories like this on the front page of papers. Instead of the usually depressing doom and gloom of the economy and banks. I would much rather read a story like this!

Chief from reading your post you sound as if you feel under appreciated. Trust me I have the utmost respect to Garda. Any dealings with them I had have being very good. But I don't go around posting every good dealing I had with a Garda! It has to do with the fact that the usual is boring and the unusual e.g Garda in the wrong is intresting.
