OK this is going to sound like stupid question, but I have to ask.
Is it better to have the car sucking the air in or to circulate it from inside the car?

Again a stupid question, but when I started I was never told stuff like this and there's no one in the immediate family driving, who at the time would have said what's best.

Thanks in advance and go easy, please

Well OP i think that it's best to have it coming from the outside. The other way you are just re-circulating the air inside the car. And this can cause the windscreen to fog up.

And there's no such thing as a stupid question! ;):D

The only time I ever use the recirculating button is when I'm passing somewhere that slurry is being spread.

I always assumed its just sucking in the fumes from whats in front of you.

Its funny you mention fogging up.One of the lads in the car pool was checking it out during the bad weather as there was condensation inside the glass. He was saying he always had it sucking air in and so far it has helped on fogging up.

Thanks, its just one of those things you feel silly asking after six years of driving.

Oh and I have mainly used it in the mornings and when its bad to clear the window and driving on open motorway(assuming sucking the air in helps the engine)

It has no effect on the engine, only on the air inside the car. Recirc is better if you want to keep fumes out, or if you want to heat or cool the interior of the car quickly - otherwise use fresh air. Recirc should never be used for long periods (particularly with a car full of people) as you won't be bringing in fresh oxygen.

The re-circ button with the A/C on is useful on cold mornings when you want to heat the passenger cabin quickly, de-mist the windows, while heating the engine as fast as possible.

Switch the heat to its lowest or blue setting, click the re-circ button to on and point the direction knob to "feet and de-mist".

Once the windows clear, but before they begin fogging up again, switch the re-circ button to off, but leave the A/C on.

Once the engine reaches operating temperature, switch the heat to whatever heat you want and once the windows are staying clear, swith the A/C to off.

If you have a car with multi-zone A/C, automatic climate control or other variations, you'll need to fuddle with my inmstructions which are for a basic manual A/C system.

Great advice, my car is the basic set up(minus the thermostat which came out with the radio head unit), so I can easily relate to this.

Full marks to all, I come on here thinking im asking a silly question and come away with an answer with some great advice thrown in .
