Recording Mpeg4 solutions?

I recently posted about my mother in law buying a toshiba dvd/vhs recorder combi but with mpeg2.
Anyhoo, I finally brought it back to the shop and ended up buying a 32" sony bravia with built in mpeg4 and divx compatible for 349.

However when I asked as to whether they had a device that i can use to record the MiL's emmerdale they said that there is nothing on the market that can do that as all DVR dvd recorders etc are all mpeg2.

Do the tvs with built in DTT not have an output that you can send the signal to another device?

Does this also mean that what is the point in having the decoder in the TV if you are going to get one in the bloody recorder??

There are TVs with USB recording outputs available.

It's no different than existing VHS or DVD/ HDD recorders. You have to have a separate tuner and decoder to allow recording one program while watching another.

    QUOTE]

Odd as when I asked the guy in the shop about this ( as my c6900 has this function but i never tested it) he says that he never heard of such a function and I was mistaken.

I will google the new tv specs but i wont hold my breath as i doubth a tv with 720p hd will have recording functionality.

Is there anything on the market at the moment that i can pick her up for christmas?

On a side note is there somewhere on this forum or the net that will give me a list of channels she should receive, she is in bettystown, just outside of drogheda. She is also using a fairly big aeriel on the top of here chimney, which she has been using for analogue terrestrial tv for the last 7 years.
Will she get the northern channels?

Funny you should say that as that is where i got the new TV.
The TV is a sony bravia BX3. When i googled it there was alot of articles about this tv having a built in hard drive but they must have released this model without one just to get rid of old stock, i wonder if i can put one in??

Anywho, atill googling to see if i can put a usb hdd in the side of it and press record, Then again i should just look at the remote and see if thee is a record button eh?? lol

Know this is in NI but should still say that there are Freeview HD recorders (though there is no Freeview HD here until DSO in 2012) being sold in Currys that will record Saorview. I have seen a Panasonic twin tuner that will record 2 channels at the same time though it was somewhat expensive at over £500.

The bolded part is untrue. There are a few on the market, the affordable ones are made by LG.

LG HR500 Blu-ray player TNT HD, 250G USB 2.0, WiFi, Ethernet HDMI, 1080p Full HD upscaling €370

LG MS450H Media Centre Freeview HD €259 250G

LG MS400H Multimedia Player/Recorder Freeview HD €219 - rack no hd - buy seperate.

BUT! There are cheaper ways to record DTT. If you buy a Xoro HRT 7510 HD DVB-T less than €50) and add a HD it would cost less than €100.

BTW The decoder in the TV is to decode and display the channel not record it. I could tell you of a module to record from the PCMIA but they are not worth the money. Its cheaper to get a dvb-t box with PVR.

    Thanks for the info STB.
Any suggestions where i could get my hands on a xoro before christmas?

I have used one with an ethernet port to connect to PC for record/replay. On most TVs and Set box you can't use it to replay unless you are tuned to a valid station as for compatibility on many older CI (esp anything not CI+) it has to fake being a CAM.

Even Tesco sells a "Freeview HD" box (£70) and a "Freeview+ HD" PVR box (£200) that ought to work here. But not in Ireland. They only sell it in UK.

From what little information I can dig up I think we'll see a change in the Tesco stock in the near future. It would not be like them to miss an opportunity to sell items bought at UK cost here at a healthy profit.

Either this Philips-hdt8520 or the SAGEMCOM RTI90-320 would they not be on the mark as V vis a vis a PVR option for DTT?

Or Try ebay france/germany with the model number. Its €41 before postage (you will have to suss out the cheapest postage). Remember you will need to connect a gard drive or pen drive to record to via the usb.

Thanks for that STB but alot of those sites say the xoro you mention is only mpeg2?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,178 ✭✭✭STB

I meant to say that. Check when you go to the link that it is the right product ie the model number. Skip the first 2 the spec sheet is for something else (the 5000) whilst it says its a 7510 at the top.

    Third link seems okay.

There are not 2 models of the same name.

HD in AVC + H.264 will be in the full spec below.

    Also try the

    AKIRA DHB-B36HR

    PEEKTON PK1870 HD

Would buying online from another country using MPEG4/MHEG5 be safe bet (could be language/shipping issues though along with the need to replace mains plugs/leads) ?

Im in the market myself for a HDD/VHS combi that supports MPEG4 (no I dont want a PVR only solution)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70 ✭✭Quackhart

okay I think I have done more than enough reading etc and just like potbelly will be buying this solution to placate my MIL's need to record every and any soap out there.

I'm plumping for the Sagemcom RTI90 witht he 320 GB HD. Now unless anybody can tell me why this solution may or may not work i'll be orderign it from Currys.co.uk for £200.

Yes ultimately you would safest with MHEG5 added as well. If EIT data was shortened to now/next then you would be depending on a timer facility instead of from EIT epg.

But the solutions are cheap and will work for viewing and recording. They allow recording of MPEG4 HD @L4. At the moment €50 is good for a box that has PVR facilities via USB. There are people willing to spend €300 for an extra tuner for a service that has only a handful of stations. Madness.
