Time for a little more adivice from you helpful folk. All things going well I should be part of the 4x4 fraternity in the coming weeks and I was wondering what you made of these two? Nissan Pathfinder and Pajero Sport. They seem like the most fuel efficient.

I know this has been discussed a good few times but I can't find a whole lot on the Pathfinder and no comparisons between the two.

Oh, incase anyone's wondering I'm a carpenter and want it for transporting tools in more comfort then a van. I'll be doing a little towing in the summer with a boat that weighs in or around a ton and some off-roading but nothing hardcore. not yet anyway.:)

Dont know much about pathfinder. The pajero sport will not be economical cabin is cramped if any taller than 5'6or7'' you will not be comfortable. load space is crap compared to pajo lc etc

Thanks. I noticed that about them alright. I had gone off the idea of a sport because of the space issue and was leaning towards a terano but I read some bad reviews of them here. The reason I went back to the idea of a sport was that they come in 2.5.
I thought the pathfinder looked bigger and seeing as they seem to be fairly abundent in 2.5 it dawned on me that they might be the way to go.

don't go near the sports, that 2.5 engine is a diesel drinker and has **** all power. go for an older 2.8 or newer 3.2.far better engines.

The 3.2 is a very troublesome engine. Don't know where the bad reviews of the Terrano's are coming from because they're a seriously underrated machine, very reliable.

Thanks. The sport is well and truly out the window now. I'm kind of restricted to a smaller engine size though because fuel is a real issue for me.
I'll put the terano back on the list then will I? I had theought they were decent seeing as every trip down the country got me stuck behind one pulling cattle and horses but I read that they liked diesel and lacked power.

    Just get a defender. :)

I'd love one but this has to be my sole form of transport and I'll be working out of it too. Little aul ones that want new floors or doors wouldn't be much impressed by a defender I think.
The defender is for when I win the lotto. One for everyone now that i think about it.

do you have a spend budget, pathfinder would be around 27-29 mpg ,plenty of space, but has a big body for 2.5 engine,i would think

I've seen '06, '07 for less then six grand. I'd be happy with that price I think if I thought I'd get a decent run out of it. The space is a big thing I need in a jeep and the pathfinder seems to have it. Acceleration wouldn't be a mad issue with me as long as it wouldn't take forever to get away from the lights.

think you wont go too wrong with space,i used a pathfinder 05 and found had enough space, and was good in soft ground too get around

I still haven't made my mind up. I could well go and get a terrano. I might even get frustrated and go for something 3.0ltr or bigger.

No commercial 4x4 will be a tyre burner, as long as you realise that and adopt a relaxed driving style you won't be disappointed (helps that you can see over most cars).

I was never a boy racer even in my boy days. I just dont want to be stuck crawling along when I've a load of tools in the back. Got any suggestions for me? I think somewhere between 2.5 and 2.8 would be alright for me.

are you taxing commercial or private motor tax ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 393 ✭✭Quiet you

Commercial. The engine size is only a consideration for fuel.

discoverys, jeep cherokee, toyota crusiers, nissan pathfinders ,kia's and sante fe 06 on models are good in fuel and do good in these weather conditions

Keep me in mind when ya do. ;)
I've been told by a few people that the bigger engine is actually more economical.
