Well you would want to go and do a theory test which covers categories b and w (work vehichles and cars) i think. You need to answer 35/40 questions correctly. You then need an eye test and then you need to apply to your local motor tax office for your provisional licence. You don't really need a full licence as you are permitted to drive on public roads without supervision unlike cars.

The above is open to correction of course. Might be one or two errors.

Apply for the theory test for category "W". Then when ya have that get eye test, 2 passport photos and fill in the provisional licence form and go to your local licensing office and bobs yer aunt, may yake a couple weeks to get though but you have plenty of time:) Ps. King advised beforre me:D You won't be able apply for a car at 16 though. Only the tractor. 99% sure on that, open to correction:)

I think the eye test is only valid for 3 months so get that after you pass your theory test. I got my provisional about 5 days after i applied for it. I was surprised at how quick it came

Buy or borrow the driver theory test CD. (around €15)

If you've a computer you can be practicing in the evenings and over the christmas holidays.

    Apply for the theory test.

Then once you've passed that you can look towards getting your learner permit (provisional licence)

Best of luck. And remember even when you do get your licence, you are still only learning. Take your time and drive safely. Being in charge of a large tractor and trailer and driving on public roads brings with it great responsibility.

On a separate point, I think the driving licence system needs to be updated to take allowance of the fact that their are now different sizes of tractor and trailer/implement sizes being used on our roads.

Mopeds are seperate to a motorbike. Surely their should be a seperate licence category for tractors under/over 100hp, not to mention the weights one should be allowed tow.

I reckon its in the pipeline...

Yep,All the info the lads gave is spot on! And in my opinion the book is better!
Im turning 19 in may so this'll be my third year driving, so I got work right before the bust. Im the youngest on the fleet and the rest of the lads are aged 23-35. I have no doubt had the recession hit a year earlier,I wouldnt have a job. The boss is beginning to get phonecalls now from lads looking for work next summer. Dont be disheartened if you dont get work this year,You'll be up against lads alot more experienced than you! And also..Ask early and in person,Not over the phone..Good Luck ;)

I also think the book is better. The CD makes the exam too easy to pass as it contains all the possible questions that will be asked. You learn the rules better from the book making you a more competent driver

The book is too boring for young people these days!! get the cd and do the preparation work on it and it goes through every question in the system alot better than the book!!!
Best of look with everything and as said above be careful on the roads as you could be a great driver but the one that crashes into you mighn't be!!!
