What would the world be like, if alcohol were illegal and marijuana were legal

    OK, firstly the rules:

This is not a debate about why marijuana should be legal or the social implications of alcohol or how dangerous alcohol is.

The questions relates to how people would be, would there be bootleg alcohol? How would it affect nights out? How would people meet women etc.

    Begin!

I don't know about anyone else but I'd find it impossible to meet women. You can't spike a joint.

Well.. bars would probably be extremely boring. What with everyone just sitting down and not moving.

They tried to make alchohol illegal in the 20s in America, didnt work very well, and again in the 90's, but a cunning local man was able to get around it by taking the beer buried in the town landfill, filling bowling balls with it then bowling them down a network of chutes to the local bar petshop, it was the cleverest thing he'd ever done.

The world would be pretty much the same except that Domino's would have the same revenue as ExxonMobil.

2am would probably contain a lot of people eating at takeaways...oh wait.

We'd have to meet women like they do in counties where people aren't all binge drinking alcoholics.

In the 90's, was the Beer Barron not Homer Simpson?

    Ah yes...the beer-baron strikes again!

What's the reason for being reasonable?

    Is that an unreasonable question?

Without booze the world would be Lionel Hutz's vision of a world without lawyers!!

Ah no seriously, in historic terms alcohol just got there first. Had Sir Raleigh brought marjuana from the New World instead of tobacco maybe we'd be debating the opposite scenario now.

What's the reason for being reasonable?

    Is that an unreasonable question?

Going to take a break from writing an archaeology essay. To write about archaeology.
If we didn't have alcohol Western Europe and China probably wouldn't be in the position they in now,
Alcoholic beverages were safer to drink than water all through the middle ages and previous eras.
Alcohol is a great bonding tool (nudge nudge wink wink) look at the spread of the Beaker Culture to see how people obviously like the idea of a piss up
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaker_culture
Alcohol gives you calories which is sh-qte now but wasn't back then.
If you look at the places and people that didn't have alcohol look at how sh-te they were and the position they are in now (though it could be just be that like the last man to the pub they're just trying to make up for lost time by binging on it)
And finally if you drink (even more than recommended amount) you live longer than people that don't.suckers.

    http://www.huliq.com/10061/heavy-drinkers-outlive-teetotalers-says-study
and thats a proper scientific study.booya

now back to essay and my glass of wine

You'd have people complaining on forums about how alcohol should be legalised... think of all the revenue the government could make....people complaining that alcohol isn't a gate-way drug and using other countries as examples of how legalising alcohol hasn't had negative effects on their population.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,354 ✭✭✭smellslikeshoes

All that would happen is instead of nipping out of the pub and around the corner for a spliff you would nip out of the coffee shop around the corner for a beer :pac:

While I appreciate the academic style referencing of your argument, that paticular study is bull sh1t, firstly it's 3000 people surveyed and there is a 9% shift, that is 270 people. All this study shows is that people die at different rates. Oh and next time I want to see Harved referencing style :)

Here we drank beer because it was safer than water but in the Far east they drank tea (boiled water).

To answer the OP, very fooking chilled out and slightly paranoid.

I don't get the 'paranoid' thing. The majority of the paranoia that comes from cannabis is caused by its illegal status. I'm sure the folks sneaking sly drinks during the prohibition were pretty paranoid about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,662 ✭✭✭RMD

More lung cancer, less liver cancer.

Marijuana smoke in itself doesn't contain carcinogens. If tobacco is used in a joint then yes it contains carcinogens, but a blunt (Just Marijuana) doesn't. Marijuana itself is actually used as a medicinal treatment for certain types of cancer. But this discussion is for another topic to be honest.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/25/AR2006052501729_pf.html

I wouldn't like alcohol being illegal, but hypothetically if it was there'd certainly be some big differences. One of the most beneficial being A&E departments wouldn't be full of various alcohol related injuries and sicknesses come the weekend.

It makes you quite introspective and very self aware, and also very aware of little things around you that you wouldn't normally notice, consequently the mind can "wander" a bit and a degree of paranoia can and often does occur because of this.
The less experienced users often have a very high level of this, and because of the illegal status, this self awareness and tendency to paranoia, things can become quite overwhelming.

Prohibition already happened in America in the 1920s. As a result alcohol became even more popular. Al Capone made a fortune from bootlegging alcohol. There was so much crime the government had to legalise alcohol again.

thats not really what its about

certain strains make the paranoia stand out more but its ore about being more self aware and bringing out your own insecurities and stuff like that i think

for example sitting in a group of people you make a joke and some people laugh but if your insecure about stuff like that when your high your way more likely to start thinking 'oh **** people didnt laugh they think im an idiot' or you are more aware that you might be doing something stupid and you get paranoid about it

the solution is simple, smoke a strain that dosnt make you paranoid

Not true. All Burning plant material is cargenogenic to some degree. In fact pound for pound marijuana is more cargenogenic than tobacco, its just that as its far less addictive than tobacco, people dont usually get intot the habit of smoking it 20 times a day, and its the repeated expoosure that really gives you cancer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 496 ✭✭rantyface

You can make alcohol so easily from readily available foods that a ban just couldn't work!
I also wonder if it would be bad for the economy since alcohol is a big industry. Unless cannabis really took off, it could never make as much money or employ as many people as the alcohol industry. A couple of farmers could probably supply the whole country.

    references please

i havnt been able to find any studies that link smoking marijuana to cancer, just burning something does not result in a carcinogen as far as i am aware but if you have something that says otherwise im all ears (or eyes or whatever the right expression for the net is)
