hi are people still breeding dogs. i was in my local rescue centre and there were, st bernard, springer spaniel, yorkie, bishon, cav, 2 beagles, basset hound, labs and retriever lots of dogs that have been thrown out in the street... the rescue centres are packed and are asking for people to foster - to make room for other dogs. i do work for a dog rescue and we put down a shocking number of dogs a day. do we really need to be breeding more!

I don't think that pointing out a fact is lecturing.
You only have to look at Done Deal and Buy and Sell to see hundreds of black labradors for sale. There are not enough homes to go round as it is so why breed any more.
And they are not the easiest dogs to re-home either. Many are got as cute puppies and not trained , not socialised , left to their own devices etc.
They are big and boisterous then at one year old, knocking over kids etc and not many are willing to take on the challenge when it comes to training and taking on a large unruly dog.
The supply really does exceed the demand when it comes to dogs in Ireland.
It's why about 15,000 a year are destroyed coz no one wants them.

    Exactly

People need to think before they act; the OP may want to indulge himself (and I'm sorry but it is an indulgence given the facts stated) by breeding his lovely dog...but can anyone really say it's in the best interests of the puppies who will enter into an uncertain, overpopulated and economically unstable world completely at the mercy of the strangers who buy them OR whether it's in the best interests of all the lovely but abandoned dogs who are in desperate need of loving homes?

Sorry OP I mean no offence to you personally, I really don't. It's just I've seen so many dogs in shelters and its heartbreaking. Truly heartbreaking.
I could only take two but I wish it could have been more. It's hard not to be deeply affected by their plight and I've formed strong opinions on the subject.

Not to be rude but you say she is gorgeous and of course she is. All our dogs are in our opinions that goes without saying really! However for breeding.. how do you know she's suitable. Good breeders breed to promote the breed, to try and minimise faults and health problems. Have you done any health tests to see if she's prone to hip dysplasia or eye problems? Or possibly a carrier of a number of debilitating diseases?

Have you shown your bitch? Has she been graded to be an excellent specimen of the breed? Has she won any titles?

Breeding should not be done just because you would like to have a litter. There are enough people out there doing that and in a lot of cases these pups then go on to have terrible illness and end up in pounds.
You also need to bear in mind that in these times - selling pups might not be as easy as you think. Also bear in mind the cost... it's not cheap to breed a litter - if you think you are going to make a small fortune think again.. breeding can cost in the area of 2-3K for 1 litter. (yes I'm serious)

I hope this doesn't seem rude as I just want to give you facts. If you have done the above and want to breed then I would suggest contacting the Labrador club secretary and ask them if they know anyone. You can find the contact numbers here http://ikc.ie/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=17&Itemid=32. You will also need to look very closely at pedigrees to ensure that the dog and your bitch are not in anyway related.

Dont bother trying to breed your pet , the people are going to pounds , rescues and shelters to find their pets .

I got a facebook message on thursday night , about somebody in need to find homes for a bundle of black pups . may have to go to the pound otherwise .
