Harvey Norman for laptops..- Good or Bad??

Just want to relate my experience. I purchased a Toshiba laptop in Harvey Norman, and as they are doing a hire purchase (rarely anywhere else is doing anything like this in Ireland any more), my wife bought a HP there.

    - Her sister gave me an eMachines laptop to fix a few months ago, the screen was gone but it was still less than a year old from Harvey Norman, so I brought it back there. I got it back about a month later. No problem, the young lad there (a supervisor) understood it was not caused by the user.

then my wife's laptop screen went. I dealt with the same guy and he mentioned that this was extremely rate but we laughed about it and he eventually agreed with my request to replace it of stock. Great.

Now my Toshiba's screen has gone and its still less than a year old.
I worked before in corporate deployments of laptops, and you can expect the screen to go (due to data cable / screen power cable / system board / screen itself), on average about 1 or 2% of laptops.

I'm embarrassed now to go back to them again. I'm guessing at this stage due to the fact that they are all different makes, that this is all a co-incidence?

every laptop ive owned has had a fault, and always catastrophic after a period of time

ive learned extended warranty is the way to go with laptops

anaway in your case, i can see how you may feel, but you have your rights and its got to be fixed, harvey norman are obliged to do this

however, if you dont want to go in, contact the manufacturer of the laptop, once u provide proof of purchase, they will arrange for you to send it to them direct and then send it back once its fixed

Theres not really a whole lot of difference between where you buy laptops, the hardware is the same no matter where you buy them.

You are right. However I opened up the laptop over the weekend, re-seated the power lead for the screen and it worked. I was lucky here - its usually a part failure that causes the screen power to go.
I think I'd recommend anyone to purchase as Desktop over a laptop. By their nature of less moving parts, it will last allot longer

i have had an experience with them, I bought a brand new netbook there (my laptop died i was looking for a cheap/quick replacement)

when i got home and opened it, i noticed the packaging was all over the place and the power cable was all unwrapped, i turned on the netbook and got a blue screen straight away,

went back into the store and the guy who sold it to me was on lunch, i was told they would have to send it away for repair, (this was the same day i bought it) and i would have it back no later than in 3 weeks time.

i was not impressed as it happened, and asked to speak to the guy who sold it to me, he came out, talked to staff member out of earshot and then walked into a totally different storeroom on the other side of the shop and returned with a sealed box with a new netbook in it. it turns out they are selling refurbed laptops quite often in there, he put the broken netbook into the 'store room' he got it from the first time and as he did i peeked inside and i saw what looked to me like a laptop repair workspace.

i've heard of a few people other than me who've had problems with their laptops.

I think ye're just very unlucky. I have a 5 year old Inspiron 9300 which has been running 24-7 for 2 years. Only problem I had which was my own fault is I broke the power jack, order than that it's perfect. I also have a 3 year old 1525 and a two year old 1520 all perfect. Maybe I'm just lucky with dells :D

Oh, I also have an 8 year old Dimension 8300 Desktop. The graphics card went in it within the first two weeks and it's been running away fine since :)

Yea, the power jack is another weak point, because they stick out, I've seen laptops where the socket gets loose from the main board from use / wear & tear
