Went back a few pages looking for posts on this but didnt find anything.

Im on Froyo, with the standard messaging app.
I noticed on my Desire this morning that all the SMS messages are gone!

The only unuasual thing I have noticed with the phone is on Wednesday night, I sent a text to a friend, and it went into the thread to texts with the wifey. After that the app has performed normally.

Im trying to figure out where they may have gone, and what could have deleted them.
Also if it is possible to retrieve them.

I have never connected the phone to the PC, or used any sync features with other devices.
    Didnt manually update anything recently.

Any ideas where to start ?

    Thanks!

there an option on the message options where it says Delete old messages as limited are reached and underneath it the text message limit, check this out if its enabled

    Nope its not ticked,

One thing I did notice is that the only option in here I had changed (delivery reports) was also not ticked.
Maybe the application reset itself ??

I will probably need to plug into a PC to see what is accessible on the phone.

Does anyone know where the messages are stored? I could use a file browser to look to see if the files are there.

I know it doesn't help you now but just in case for next time. I'm using this app: Sms Backup

It creates a folder in your gmail and can be set to manually or automatically back up your messages. It works great.

    Ahhhhh!

This has happened now for the second time. I got a message that the app closed unexpectedly, and i only get an option to force close the app. When i go back in all my messages are gone!!!

Anyone know why? or have a solution? Desire Z btw

Not much help to you but I can confirm that this happened to me also on a desire. There are some reports of it happening with the new version of Sense too and when they disappear locally this mass deletion is pushed to the server! I think I'll be getting that SMS backup program tonight.

Just happened me today on my Desire Z as well. App force closed and bang, all messages that were on my sim are gone. Annoying as hell. Luckily i have all my messages on my old phone up till the end of december.

    must look into chompSMS..

SMS Backup Plus is a better app... backups SMS and Call logs to gmail AND can restore them to phone (unlike SMS backup).

This is after happening to me there earlier on my Desire HD. Nothing important lost just a tad annoying!

I'm trying to log into HTC Sense to see if my messages are backed up there, but the website is not working it seems and I cant get into the account from my phone because it is saying the password is wrong, which it isnt!

Has anyone else got any trouble accessing the sense site?

    Cheers

Thanks Idleater, I'm not too worried about the messages i've lost but I will set up a backup for future use. I just got this email response from HTC so hopefully this issue will be fixed shortly. My software is version 1.06.0000.278886

    HTC <eu-no-reply@htc.com>
    Thank you for contacting HTC.
In regards to your SMS query, I can help you with that.
We are aware that a bug exists on this software version. We are currently creating a hotfix for this issue. I apologise for this situation. Can I suggest an application 'SMS backup', that will backup future messages to the SD card.
    Sincerely,
    Jon

Interesting response and acknowledgement from HTC. Obviously one tends to think of these things after the fact, so it's good that you haven't lost any crucial data.

The SMS Backup+ is good at backing up the call log too to your gmail account. It's painless to set up and there are rules to for example only sync over wifi.
