Looking for peoples opinions on this one...I'm a third year mature student doing a computer science degree and it is coming up to placement time. The college are advertising placements with various companies and some of them interest me.

Now I have being looking for a placement off my own back since last summer but not having much luck, but now my other half who works in an IT company says there is a job in her place that is mine if I want it (plus it's VERY well paid...way above what any student intern would get) just that the work might not be what I was hoping for and that it is pretty boring at times(her words). No I don't have much office experience yet alone IT experience so I'm thinking well it is experience just not in the areas I would of hoped for and it is well paid too. Bonus!

But then I think am I being swayed by the cash and maybe I'm better off trying to secure a college placement in an area that I think I would be interested in and possibly be of more benefit to me in the long run...but there ain't no guarantee that I could land any of these jobs ( competition bound to be fierce)

So should I go for the well paid but possibly boring irrelevant job in IT or try hold out and secure a placement in an IT area that interests me:confused:

    Can you not do both?

Take the job but keep trying to find a role that suits you better.

I guess I could take the job with herself but I wouldn't like to walk out of it after say 2-3 months if I got something more suitable. I'm sure that would make her look bad to her boss and leave her in an awkward position after talking me up, getting me the job then I only stick it for a month or two.

If I don't take it, no drama. But if I were to take the job and then leave after 2-3months I think that would be worse? No/yeah?

Being honest? I'd say take that job, get in good there and hope they hire you after college. Then you can look for what you want while you're making money. A mate of mine had awful trouble finding work in IT until he got a job and now he gets calls once a week with job offers. Jobs are much easier to get once you have one!

The whole point of a college placement is to gain experience in the field you are studying in. I know the cash seems attractive but you may regret not gaining the experience you need - when it comes to interview time after college you may be left with nothing to say for yourself.

Very easy for me to say that not knowing your financial situtation - in a perfect world I would go for the relevent experience placement every time.
