    Hi Guys,
I'm new to this so please excuse all or any ethical mistakes. I recently returned from the UK where i worked for my life i have bought a small detached house in athlone. I have recently obtained my shooting licence and a new two year old springer spaniel fully trained the season is going well and i have had alot of luck already, never lost the shot haha. The kennel is beside the house and every night without fail charlie comes to visit. He drives the dog and me mad. I can get to within 10 yards with the lamp but then he runs. Any ideas as how to lets see how can i say this <snip> him??

I was told to get a second dog but not sure to trust the advice. Don't want to have double the trouble?

If you are in an isolated house, no neighbours around and no cattle or a wall on the far side of where you dog house is, purchase some BB's for your shotgun that conform to the manufacturers proofing of your gun, lamp the fox fire away from your dog house where its a safe shot. and have a good nights sleep when your dog doesnt bark anymore :D

Like markd said, next time you see him give him some medicine;)

That was my thought Mark. But with the new legislation and i had a lot of trouble getting the licence due to the fact i was returning from the UK. I would gladly "riddle" him but cant chance it. In a pretty isolated place but the people that are here are "townies" who would jump on the phone at the sound of a shot and what a easy shot it would be crouching at ten yards. EASY

Aslong as you have a safe backstop and arent firing in the direction of an nearby houses you should be fine the shoot him

Maybe talk to the farmer next to you and ask him can you shoot a few crows, then use the noise opportunity to call you fox at dawn or dusk and send him to foxy heaven. If people hummmm and haaaaa over a few shots in the countryside they'd want to grow up a little! Gunshots in the country are part of that life, like traffic noise in the middle of town or city

<snip> Maybe im been to wary or maybe its been in the "forbidden land" for to long but i dont want to take the chance the crow shooting is a good idea i will try it.

why bother shooting crows and giving them a reason to complain, next time you see the fox shoot it, a quick bang and its done most people wont take any notice of it, but if your shooting a few crows people will look into where the noise is coming from, if i was you i would wait until the fox is outside shoot him, job done, provided you have a safe backstop etc

I know what you mean I have often walked out of Scully's with some cartridges and while walking back to the car you can get some funny looks.
Where abouts in Athlone are you?
Maybe you could get someone with a .22lr with a mod if you have a safe back drop.

Some people need to live and let live.

You've everyright to be concerned for your license. You worked hard enough to get it so might aswell cherish it and protect it and keep safe. Also maybe suss out a few people in the area see has one of them an air rifle, if the fox is coming that close a strong air rifle and a shooter with a steady hand with a pellet through the foxes head will sort your problem.

Getting to know the farmer(s) in the area will benefit you, your sport and the farmer too.

Thanks for all the feedback lads. A place called Meehan. North of the town. The .22 would be a gr8 idea may get to know the people here better first. I know them to say hello and that but not sure if they will let me have a rifle just yet. Just sit and suffer here first. I know of one local man has a small air rifle if i sat in ambush i could definitely get him. wont be long now till he is out. Bit of luck though the whore will starve in the cold

i wouldnt shoot a fox with an air rifle to be honest, if you need to get a 22, an air rifle wont give you a certain clean kill, a 22lr will with good shot placement, i know the fox is annoying but it deserves a clean kill, not having a go at you by the way, id still shoot the fecker with the shotgun

for the time been if it really gets to you you could always try making some lasso traps with rope or wire and then kill it humanely. if u heard the dog u would know its around and be watching.

It's a cz style. I won't be selling for a good while. I'm trying to raise funds and getting a .223. Was thinking of after christmas but it looks more like the end of the summer before I make a move.

Some of the comments and entire posts in this thread are, frankly, unacceptable. Foolish words spoken here can damage us all and be used against us all. Any more of this craic and I'll have to hand out more infractions and bans.

Aer a pass around? If there's no stray cats or dogs around from the neighbouring houses, you could set a snare!
Nice and quiet, and your dog will probably let ya know when he's in it!:D

How close are the neighbours exactly?
