another night another fox

the father rang me today around 11:30, he said he saw a fox sitting out in the sun in the corner af a neighbours field so we said we'd try calling him tonight.
we went out around 11, and tried calling around the bottom of the farm first. we tried the rabbit distress in bursts for about ten minutes but no takers, so we decided to relocate to the bridge on our lane that crosses the railway.
there's no one else living down our lane so we knew we were safe on it. the bridge itself gives us a good view of about 400-500 yards in all directions and all shots are safe since i'd be firing at a downward angle.
we tried the rabbit distress first with no luck, i'd say the sound was travelling well tonight since there's no wind and it's freezing hard.
since the rabbit wasn't working we tried the vixen again to see if we'd get another horny dog.
we gave this about a minute of constant calling, then a three bark burst every 10-15 seconds.
we were just about to give up when we spotted a yellow spark around 450 yards away. the father thought it was the horse, but a quick look through the scope confirmed it was a fox.
he wasn't really coming in to the vixen call too well, so i switched back to the rabbit, well this changed things straight away, it seems he was more worried about his belly than his hormones. when he got to about 250 yards i turned off the caller and just let him come in as far as he wanted.
i kept the crosshair on him as he strolled in and when he stopped up and turned broadside at around 120 yards i sent a vmax to sort him out.
he was a handy sized dog fox, i'd say he was only this years cub, but it was no harm to have him gone out of the place, at least it'll make things safer for the few pheasants that are still around.

i'm using a u-caller remote, the two calls i'm using at the moment are the rabbit distress and the vixen call.
