Buy an svideo to rca cable ,3 male, red ,white, yellow, plug it into the rca inputs, cost 5 euro, powercity, maplins.
SET resolution to 720x576 ,pc refresh rate to 60mhz.thats pal tv dvd resolution.
OR USING THE cable you have now,go to tv,menu, press av,av,extension 1, input,1,av,av,etc ,source,1,2,3 ,av 3,4,5 eg some tvs have 7 inputs, vga, hdmi etc so try them all.
you may need to press fn plus function key ,f6,f7,f8, to turn on vga out ,try that first.
try fn plus function key, that has 2 square, tv monitor icons.
most of the time tv out, svideo, is not on,unless you use fn/function key.
    SEE www.svideo.com for advice.
you may have the sound cable plugged into the rca video in,=yellow socket rca in.try the other cables in rca in.
tvs have 3 rca in , white ,red,=sound, yellow = svideo in. you can buy a scart unit that has 3rca in,
cost 3 euro, set signal to in ,on the unit, plug into tv scart, av1.

I have a related query - I have an S-Video and also a HDMI on my laptop. My TV has HDMI and Scart inputs.

Am I best connecting HDMI to HDMI or is there an advantage in using the HDMI on the Laptop?

    Thanks

Never had any trouble with HDMI to HDMI so id go with that tbh, any trouble i've had has been with converter cables (VGA to Y Pb Pr) etc...

You should get sound thru the hdmi, plus it enables you to use higher resolutions,eg 1080p,or 1024x768 ,make sure pc refresh rate is 60mhz.
svideo is 720x576 max.IT YOU ARE JUST watching dvds it may be easier to just
use an svideo cable. You may need to enable audio out, on the pc hdmi, depends on the existing settings on the laptop os.
