The 17A runs along Oscar Traynor road and will drop you off at the corner of Glasnevin Avenue and Ballymun road which is a 5 minute walk from DCU. It's quite a slow route these days though, you should allow 25 - 35 minutes and more at morning rush hour. Here is the timetable and the map of stops.

I used to do it regularly, 17A is really the only option. Though I used to find it was nearly as quick walking.

Another alternative, depending on where you are, might be to walk in the back way to Beaumont Hospital and get a 104 from there.

17A has to be one of the most unreliable buses. I use it regularly to get to DCU. More often than not it's either 10 - 20 minutes late or just doesn't show up.
Going through Beaumont added 10 mins to my journey yesterday. Absolute joke of a service.
So be warned op, if you're getting the 17A give yourself plenty of time. If you have to get it I suggest leaving 20 minutes earlier than you normally would for a bus. If you miss one god knows when the next one will show up.

If the route from where you live going into town is frequent it might make more sense to take 2 buses (from reliability point of view if you have to be in DCU by a certain time then just relying on the 17a) Its a more 'roundabout' way to do it but coming from town to DCU only takes 20 mins when traffics lite. And as you have a choice of 5 frequent bus routes (13/a, 11/a/b, 4, 19a, 3) from O'Connel St. so its unlikley you'd be waiting more then 10 mins to get one.

I get it almost every morning around 7.30 to get to work and home around 7.30pm and I have no problems. It didn't run one morning last week because it broke down but apart from that, I find it very reliable. I do agree that the diversion through Beaumont and Kilmore makes it even slower and less useful.

I'd agree with you there. Anytime I've gotten early in the morning its usually reliable, one every 10 minutes or so. But a lot of the time I get it to DCU is late morning/early afternoon, say between 11 and 3 and its ridiculously unreliable. I've lost count of the amount of times I've let down by the 17A.

Fair enough, I'm usually far, far away by lunchtime so I've never noticed that. I wonder why it goes downhill after the morning rush - other than Santry Avenue onto Balymun road, it doesn't really get held up anywhere.
