heating oil

    has any of u ever used tractor diesel as home heating oil, reading a post about it there now and this fella swore by it,also does anybody take it accross from the north themselves in a tank its 200euro cheaper now for 1000 lts but is it worth the risk?

    Don't a lot of heating systems run on diesel????

    Most people around me go North for heating oil and red diesel. They bring them back in thise 1000l plastic tanks with the metal cages. Is there a risk?? I don't think its illegal so long as it is for your own use. There's a place just a few hundred yards over the border in Ballyconnell/Derrylin - just in front of the Quinn Cement Plant. Anyone living in the north and close to the border comes south for their car diesel as it is much cheaper

    mgo is cheaper than kerosene me thinks , kerosene is also alot cleaner than mgo

    If you were to have an accident God forbid, which resulted in one of those IBC's being damaged and the fuel spilt, and caused another accident or seeped into the drainage systems, and on into rivers etc, causing a pollution incident, then as an unlicenced haulier, I guess you would be in MEGA poop:mad: No insurance would cover you I would think, and the cost of resulting damages, would put you out of house, home amd farm:confused:

    I don't think there's a huge variation in price (?) but i'm open to correction on that one. Modern boilers are setup to run on kerosene (it is cleaner) and definitely if you're using a condensing boiler it needs kerosene. If like the majority of the country you have an older style boiler then it can run on either. The pump pressure needs to be adjusted if changing between the two and a different nozzle required too. But basically its fairly straightforward to change over

    Totally agree and I am aware of the dangers. I'm not advocating that anybody does it. Its dangerous, but there is no law to say that you cannot do it - that's the point I was trying to make.

    i was under the opinion that if the customs caught u at it ur vehicle was siezed and u were fined is this true

    using diesel instead of home heating oil is possible but the diesel burns much dirtier and will cause the fuel inlet jet to clog up which in turn will stop your boiler running a bit like using dirty diesel in the car causing fuel injectors to block either way a bit of an expense to put right and usually will cause you a problem when you require your heating most and your plumber is away
    what im trying to say is i wouldnt reccomend it

    If I'm not mistaken you would have to have a bunded tank to legally transport fuel oil and chemicals etc. Could be wrong though.

    The last icb tanks that I got had originally contained oil for cooling transformers. So I presume that they would also be safe enough to carry diesel. Most people around here use them anyway. A few have small diesel bowsers on wheels.

    Are the small diesel bowsers (eg. cashels etc for behind a jeep) bundened? I'd suppose they'd have to be when travelling at speed:rolleyes:

    Your IBC firstly wouldn't be permanently secured to your trailer and secondly wouldn't be bundened. Where's it going to go when you slam on the breaks....?:eek:

    To be honest I know nothing about bunded tanks or any sort of tanks, I'm just telling what people are using. Some people bring heating oil in 5 gallon drums in the backs of vans, others have bowsers and others that I have seen use the 1000l or 600l plactic tanks in the metal cages. Whether its legal or not or they get caught or not does not impact on me. I'l just telling you what other people do. I don't do it myself as I don't use heating oil and I buy my tractor diesel from a relative. I've never heard of anyone being told by guards or customs to stop doing it or to use a bunded tank. Its common practice around here - there are even a couple of lads with jeeps and covered cattle trailers that will hold 2 ibc tanks that bring weekly loads back and sell for cash. Last year on christmas day, a neighbour ran out of oil and was able to get 500l within a half hour.
