Going to live Athletics

I've been thinking about trying to get tickets for the Olympics and stuff and to be honest, I'd kind of wish I'd stumbled across athletics and stuff sooner as I enjoyed the European Championships in Barcelona and was kind of wishing I'd went.

So with that in mind, I was thinking about heading to the Diamond League meeting in Birmingham next summer. Mostly because it's the closest location wise.

Anyone here ever been to one of these or other live athletics events? What's the atmosphere and experience like in general?

From looking at the Diamond League website, there will be a 5K at that event which is something I'd be interested in seeing.

Gateshead used to have a great atmosphere will be interesting to see if the Birmingham one can have the same. Usually alot of Irish head over anyway so it can be a good weekend
Cork City Sports is another good one closer to home which attracts some big names which might interest you or sooner the National Seniors up in the Odyssey is a good weekend with some great races

Was in Stuttgart the year before last and had a ball, planning another trip next year but not sure where yet. Would love to get upto Oslo at some point.

Never been a fan of live athletics, it's not like going to live football, GAA or rubgy matches. There are always big gaps and you're not guaranteed a good seat for every event. If you get a seat specifically to see the 100m you'll miss the long jump and so on.

Having gone to Brussels for the Van Damme Golden League meets in 08 and 09 and seen the likes of Bolt in the flesh, I find you're better off staying at home and watching it.

I'd also recommend heading to Belfast for the Irish Indoors in the Odyssey. Juveniles compete on Saturday, some Senior events Sat evening and then all day Sunday. 2011 dates are 19/20th Feb. Odyssey is excellent venue to see everything going on. Outdoors, the spectator is much further away from the action. Would be fantastic if it was full but spectator turnout is not usually that good.

Went to Barcelona last year for 4 of the 6 days and it was awesome. Most enjoyable sporting atmosphere Ive ever experienced. It was great seeing so many different nationalities with their flags waving all intermingling together. The buzz I got off seeing Derval winning silver from the front row of the stadium and then getting to congratulate her on her lap of honour afterwards is something that will stay with me for a long time.
