Im wondering what effect my GF moving in with me would have on our payments. At present, I'm on a 3 day week, using the X and O system. I own my house, having a mortgage on it. My GF lives at home with her parents who are both employed, is on JSA, and attends college one day a week. I'm 28, she's 26. What difference would it make to our entitlements if she was to move in with me? Good/bad?

You'll be means tested. A couple is entitled to approx. 320 a week (less now after yesterday) so her JSA will be reduced in line with your income. If she gets rent allowance, she'll lose that too.

Ok thanks. Now say a seperate friend of mine was to move in, and HER situation was identical to my girlfriends.. whats the deal then?

You'd need separate bedrooms for a start ;)

There's 4 bedrooms in the house. Dont worry, I wouldnt be sharing with my friend, she smells. Unlike my girlfriend, who's lovely ;)

You won't lose anything and neither will she. In the eyes of the law and the state you are still two single individuals. If anything you could increase the money in your pocket by 'renting' her a room which she could claim rent allowance for. As long as she doesn't pay you over €10k per year under the rent a room scheme you don't have to pay any tax on it.....I think....

Say nothing lie if you have too.

so in short, the GF is better staying at home, and the friend would have to be renting for 6 months before being eligible for rent supplement..
Looks like I'm staying on my own then.

Your GF is no better or worse moving in with you. She won't lose out on her entitlements.

Your not married so in the eyes of the state your both still two single people. She can have no claim over anything you earn so your wages cannot be taken into account when she is being assessed for JSA.

    Not true for Social Welfare.

Rubbish.....You will be classed as co-habbiting so in the eyes of the SW its the same as being married.
