Always best to check various sites and make several phone calls. A company that gives good quotes one day may give terrible quotes a month later. I have a phone number for someone giving good quotes at the mo. I'll PM it to you.

Get a phone book, comfy chair and a big mug of tea and ring every company.

Get ready for loads of questions, yes yes yes no no yes no yes no, over and over again.
But it's the only thing to do to get the best quotes. Ring brokers also.

Make sure your car is "insurance friendly" for a learner driver, ie, not a big engine.

Question: if the (fully licensed) owner of the car has fully comp insurance on it, is it acceptable for me (learner permit) to get 3rd party insurance on the same car with different a company, assuming of course that we never made the same claim to both insurers? Would this be a worthwhile option to take or is it generally cheaper for mr fully insured to add me as a named driver?

I wouldn't think the above is even possible. As far as i'm aware you must be the registered owner of the vehicle to insure it at all. And then there's the issue of having the car insured under two different policies at the same time.

But either way, getting insured as a named driver would certainly be the cheaper option. The only draw back being that as a named driver you wont be earning any no claims bonus, although most insurance companies will take into account named driving experience when issuing quotes.

Not possible and even if it was it would not be practical. Usually the best route is to be named on their policey for now. But get different quotes because you may find a different insurance company that will give a lower quote.
