Too much protein in one go?

I recently started on the whey protein shakes and I have a question. I just ate a chicken breast as part of my dinner. If I take a shake now, will my body be able to take in all the protein? Would it be better to wait a while before having the shake to get the most benefit? I understand the body can only absorb nutrients so fast. I heard that with vitamin C tablets with massive amounts of vitamin C, the body can't absorb it all fast enough and it just gets excreted. Is this true? Also is it better to take a shake on an empty stomach? This evening shake is in addition to my post-workout shake in the morning.

    Thanks.

Hey, Now I'm no expert on the matter but a guy i was talkin to in the gym when i first started told me the best time to take shakes are......

    Workout Days.

1 serving about half an hour before workout.
1 serving immediately after workout, in locker room as this is when your body will absorb it the quickest.

    Recovery Days.

1 shake at any time during the day and eat a high protien meal.

This is the pattern i've been following over the last year and it's working pretty well for growth and strength gains.....

Now all I have to do is stop drinking beer and loose the gut lol.

    Anyway I hope this helps

As far as I know about protein your body will absorb what it needs and excrete the rest, it isn't stored. Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin and therefore it doesn't get stored in the body, any excess will just be excreted. Vitamins and protein are absorbed differently as far as I know so it should be fine taking them together.

A chicken breast will generally have around 40g of protein in it, that on it's own is probably enough protein for 1 meal so taking the shake isn't going to be very beneficial IMO, I would just wait a while.

    Heres my advice:

Calculate how much protein you need/want to consume per day.

Decide how you're going to spread these calories out throughout the day ie. 6 meals, 5 meals etc. (Consider a shake 1 of these meals.)

Make sure 1 of these meals is directly after your workout for the most benefit.

If you don't have the means to get all of the protein you need per day from whole food ONLY THEN do you need to supplement your diet with a protein powder like the one you have.

I could be completely wrong but! Hope this helps you :)
