Have I missed it or has Motor Tax just been forgotten in the flurry to increase other taxes??

4c on petrol and 2 on diesel?? why not the other way around. A litre of diesel pollutes more!

    I despair - I really do.

Quite apart from the fuel increase, that there isn't a single attempt - neither good nor bad - to address the outrageous tax inequity vis-a-vis motor tax....

...boy oh boy am I looking forward to canvasser's calling to my door in a few week's............

+1. I have a car I do about 500 miles a year in. I have to pay hundreds for tax, where a rep in a 08 318d can do 40k miles a year, wreck the roads and the environment for 156 a year, and yet he's the one being rewarded by the 'green motor taxes'.

Posted this in the Budget 2011 thread too.

But the 4c/l petrol rise is the third budget in a row petrol has been raised. Take into account the 4c/l carbon tax last year, 8c/l the year before and then add VAT to all that and that's around 20c/l added to petrol in 2 years.

    Think it's about 10-12c/l to deisel (5c,2c,2c)

    Car enthusiast.
Its not just car enthusiasts that get hit with this.

Do ministers not realise that adding to the cost of fuel affects everyone who owns a car and more importantly the costs of transporting raw materials and finished goods in this country.

What a bunch of muppets.........these costs SHOULD be going down in a recession, not going up. There is a crazy amount of VAT/Duty/TAX/Carbon levy or whatever the fcek on these fuels already.

Those people who require a car or vehicle for work will be paying more taxes and paying more to work.
Great stuff, well fcuking done lads.

    +99,999,9999,9999 (well ****it, they're throwing zero's around, I might as well throw '9's.... )

I just spent all afternoon pricing 3 jobs in N.I., which included shipping multiple artic's up there, with stuff. In the space of a few hour's, not only has the cost of delivering the stuff gone up, I have to re-factor the import of the raw materials, to make the product, as well.

So, will the diesel cost make the whole job uncompetitive, and I lose the entire thing ? It's entirely possible.

Such ****-witted 'funnel vision' is beyond belief..........

True, but enthusiasts tend to get hit worse - often have more/higher powered cars, despite the ridiculous tax/insurance prices already.

Not often you get a performance car with decent MPG either - so compared to others, enthusiasts do get hit worse.

They may, however it is there CHOICE to have these higher MPG cars. They may only take them out once a week as well. You have to pay for your "enthusiasm".
Most business have no choice. They can obviously go for cheaper to run vehicles but there is significant costs involved here.

Transits and other commercial vehicles arent exactly the most economical either.

Sorry, but, No.  and I'll bite my tongue on the expletive I'd like to use...

I am entitled, as a citizen of this State, to equity under the tax system. It has nothing to do with what car I drive. The govt have decided that the well off not only get to have lower motor tax but - and here's the kicker - that they'll GIVE YOU A GRANT to buy the ****ing thing !

I haven't even mentioned the cost in depreciation forced on me by the asshole who decided that January 2008 is the Be All and End All of fair tax.

I'm not so sure what the idea with raising VAT is. Anyone who's VAT registered and buys in products for their business will just buy from abroad now. You'll get the cheaper prices that are available on mainland Europe anyway, and get all the VAT off (Obviously, you've to do your books on the stuff that's brought in regardless) - so how is this supposed to promote business here?

As a small business owner, I'll end up now buying most of what I need from abroad, and only what I need urgently locally. Cars are going to be more expensive again with the new VAT too!

Galwaytt, you may be misunderstanding me. I was making the point that a car enthuasiast may make the choice to drive these type of cars.
I am pointing out that its not just car enthuasiasts that get hit hardest here.
Those that own a fleet of cars/vans will get hit infinetly more and as a result the costs of goods and services will effect EVERYONE whether tangible or not.

Also, tax system equitibilty is non existent in this state, mainly due to the stealth taxes such as this one.

Just wondering has anyone else seen retailers being a bit generous with their increases on the ol' petroleum?

My local is at 139.9 a litre today. Off the top of my head (and I looked for a receipt from last week to confirm but to no avail) I was charged 132.9 last week.

    Anyone else seeing similar trends?

Petrol/Diesel have been going up up up for the past few months.
We'll be paying over 1.50 per litre in Jan at the rate they are going.
And the majority of that will be tax.
    Joke.

Yeah I noticed the gradual increase but at the same time the petrol going up by 4c on the night of the budget seems like (in my example anyway) an excuse for them to throw on an extra few cent too. But i suppose would we expect anything different
