You are mad for it :) why don't you start off small and perfect your welding and fabrication skills, Here is one you can make from one sheet of common mild steel 5x10 16ga. what type of boat were you thinking of.

My uncle is working on his second aluminium boat.

Quite a bit bigger than what you have in mind, though (the first was 47ft and sailed around the North Pole). :)

We met the crew of Northabout in Inisboffin in Summer 2008 after the Volvo. We were starting our round Ireland trip. Had great craic with the lads over a few pints, some great stories told!

I would go with a wooden build first they are a lot easer to work with,my boats are Glen-l and because they are old they are proven to be good designs they also have a great forum that offers all the help you need, have a look through the customer photos and the boat plans catalog I am sure you will find something you like. Pick a boat that will fit your needs like what type of water you will be using it in and the number of people you would like to carry.

    http://www.glen-l.com/

I have all their books and would recommend buying "boatbuilding with plywood" and "inboard motor installation" if you are going for an inboard, these will give you an idea of the work that's involved in building your own boat and all the tips of the trade.

    Best of luck.
