I know obviously hard to pick - but some of mine are as follows:

Comedy - the Life of Brian (only saw all of it recently and it honestly is the funniest film ever in my view anyway - just have to get around to watching the Holy Grail at some stage)

Drama - definately Gladiator, I could watch this over and over and over again

Romance - hard to pick here, have 3 stand out favourites, Gone with the Wind, Jerry Maguire or the Notebook (i know how cliched, yawn)

Kids movie - The Labyrinth, I remember this from when I was a kid and just loved all the puppet characters in it, and wierdly enough, even as a child I had a strange fascination with David Bowie (does that make me a complete freak)

In general I will watch most films, except horror really.

Of all of these, Gladiator is definately my favourite film, and Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe have become one of my favourite collaborations (also love American Gangster). I honestly think is a major modern day classic, excellent war scene's, tension, romance, rivalry, hatred, passion, treachory the whole kitchen sink. Very believable leading actor. Excellent effects too :)

So tell us some of your favourites, and if possible describe why.

Mods - I apologise if this sort of thread has been started already...

Gotta be the movie Twister, with Bill Paxman and Helen Hunt. I think most people will agree. Definitely one of the greatest films ever made.

Definitely! Bill Pacman then went on to hit the home run only a few months later with Independence day. In '96 Bill was unstoppable.

My favourite film is Predator II, starring Danny Glover and Bill Paxton. I think we can all agree that Bill Paxton is the greatest actor of his generation, and maybe even of all time.

    1) The Exorcist

truly the only horror film that ever scared me,I have seen it 10 times now and it still scares the pants offa me.

    2) Apocalypto,

I was dragged kickin and scramin to see this because I hate
subtitles, to put it simply,I had to be pulled out of my chair when it finished, truly mesmerising experience in cinema.

    3) Comedy ,yea always loved python so life of brian is right up there, also loved early Steve Martin stuff like the man with 2 brains or All of me.

    4) Raging Bull, de niro at his absolute brilliant best, also the God father.

    5) Goodfellas, amazing film.

    6) The Green Mile,masterpeice.

lots more but thats what always comes to the forefront of my mind when discussing this subject, all incredible films.

Yeah, I know sorry, I did a search on the films page for "favourite films" but nothing recent came up and there were loads of pages but nothing that I could see on peoples general favourite films - could be wrong though.

Yup, The only movie i felt he didnt perform to his full potential was Mighty Joe Young. Don't get me wrong, it's still a good film, I just think Paxton's heart wasn't properly in it.

When Harry met sally. It was the last time Billy Crystal could step outside the house without being escorted by Robin Williams or Robert Di Nero to protect him from baying mobs wanting to rip his head off and it was the last time Meg Ryans soul was ever seen.

That and it is the sweetest movie ever made that gives me hope when I think that there may in fact not be a Mrs Daithmac out there.

Excellent choice, Terminator 2 is by a mile the best action film ever made and my second favourite film of all time, it's got such a superb story and betters the excellent original in every way

I have a special place in my heart for these three (3rd,4th,5th)

Pulp fiction - the best film dialogue ever, almost every line sparkles
Braveheart - an incredibly powerful, moving, epic masterpiece, a truely unforgettable experience
the Usual Suspects - the greatest twist in the history of the entertainment industry, a work a pure genius that will never be bettered

But lets get serious here, theirs one film that stands heads and shoulders above all the films above, yes it's that film that everyone keeps banging on about but the film really is that special

For me the Shawshank Redemption is by far the best film ever made, watching the films uplifting and inspiring ending for the first time is for me the greatest moment of my life and up until the day I die I will always remember and want to talk about that utterly mesmerising experience - it's also the only guarenteed cure to tomorrows budget

Ok, I second these two - I obviously hadnt got my thinking cap on. See my problem is, I like so many different types of films that I sometimes forget about the glaringly obvious ones....

Must sit down and watch Shawshank again soon.

Am I the only one the thinks The Shawshank Redemption is the most overated film of all time. unbelievable in places and overall too sweet to be wholsome. not a patch on other prison films like Cool Hand Luke and even The Birdman of Alcatraz,

Try playing ''Sull'Aria'' from Figaro to calm the inmates in Limerick Prison and see how far it gets you - more like ''Sure'we'll av'ya'' aria

i always kinda hate saying shawshank, but it is flawless, and probably my most watched film except when i watched supermario brothers every staurday morning for 6 months when i was younger,

but to break it down to a list off the top of my head at this moment in time,

    comedy
dumb and dumber, i still laugh at its stupidity to this day,
happy gilmore, i love this film and i have broken a number of golf clubs trying to copy happys swing:D

    drama,
a beautiful mind, only watched it again last night and really shows what kind of stuggles some humans have to overcome in there lifes, making your own seem so sad that you complain you have to go to the shop for milk,
evelyn, odd i know, but i have watched this film a few times, and have really liked it just as much as the first time, its kinda sad that something like this was so common place less than 2 generations ago,

    action
commando, classic arnie, and comments that have stood the test of time, total mindlessness, and just as enjoyable now as when it was made,
armageddon, i duuno what it is but i really liked this film, i think the story unfolded in a good way, the action sequences awere great and steve buscemi was in it, :D

    sci-fi
star trek 4, loved this film never watched the original series, but i liked the films, particulary this one, so funny with chekov asking random people on the street where the nuclear vessels were,
V for Vendetta, now this was a great film, loved the totaliaran britton, and the great idea behind the film, really shows off the nanny state they have going on over there,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 50 ✭✭mrsscott

See this is why I prob shouldnt have started this thread - I'm being reminded of my other favourite films (my list changes all the time)

Armageddon and Forrest Gump are two more of my favourites...

And actually, above Gladiator - Cool Hand Luke is my FAVOURITE of all time. I honestly dont think anyone can beat Paul Newman.
The boxing scene and the bit where they "break" his spirit are brilliant

no your not, its not that its overated its just it has the most broad appeal of any other film, youd find it hard to meet a person who hasnt seen it, and most people who did, liked it, and probably 80% of them have watched it multiple times through the years,

i personally find if you ever watch a film you could only realistically give the film a 9/10, the only time you could ever give a film a 10/10 is if you have watched it at least 3 times and enjoyed the third time just as much as the first,

mystery shows and twisty shows dont really end up near the top (with the odd exceptiong every 3-5 years) cause once you know the twist the film isnt as enjoyable the second time around, never mind the third, this relates to others types of films two, but you get what i mean,

shawshank has no twists, there is no mystery, but there also no flaws, i have never heard a real debate on peoples issues with the film, people say they dont like it, but they never seem to go into detail of what it was exactly that they disliked about it,

Outstanding movie, about the only one at that time that made any valid coment on how western democracys hard fought freedom curtailed to serve national security but just really to serve elites . And all this from a graphic novel - just goes to show where to go when you really want to find out what going on

I agree with most of that, and I certainly agree with you on thriller films and those with a twist, after all ther is only so mahy times Janet Leigh can be done in the shower before desdending in to panto

Shawshank is a nice film. maybe aven a good one , long eway from a great one. And to those the say give examles here Go ( home not to bust any bubble now)
    I) all the good guys too good and all the bad guys are Orcs on sabatical form LOTR. murderers rapist arsons nothing lik a cool ''bru'' to make us men again. makes you wonder how the prisons of the 50's evolved to the prisions of' the 90'sn
2)plot hinges on Tim Roberts never changing his Cell - Posters yes Cell No' remember the slogan ''time and pressure'' intoned by Morgan Freemen and lets be honest If Morgan had said '' Beam him up scotty'' we would have belived it, delivered in those melifflous tones, but the slogan was wrong it should have been ''time and pressure ...and ..and whatever you do dont change my cell !... Poster yes- Cell no , I just need this particular cell for another 35 years . This is not suspension of disbelief this is after the audience has a the lobotomy.

It is late and iam tried and '''I want to be alone'' if the interest is there I can give more tomorrow.

and please remember I am not saying it is not a good film I am saying it is not a great film and woudl/should never make in any top 100

    Blade Runner

It sags narratively in many places, has about 11 different versions of varying quality/coherency, and is almost certainly not the best film ever made.

But its EASILY my favourite film of all time. Stunning visuals, sound design and music coupled with a good performance from Harrison Ford and a GREAT performance from Rutger Hauer, throw in some "What makes us human?" navel-gazing and you've got the greatest realisation of a dystopia you will ever see in a film.

    I just love it.

    Platoon.

Absolutely top-notch in every aspect - acting, directing, dialogue, lighting etc. Just a treat from beginning to end. Plus it doesnt have one of these cheesy endings like practically every other piece of work. Realistic war film unlike your typical Tom Hanks/Hollywood crap like Saving Private Ryan.

I disagree. There's nothing wholesome about rape and beatings in the Shawshank. Film was balanced well IMO.

Sling Blade,...... 'some folks calls it a Kaiser blade, I calls it a sling blade'
Billy Bob is just amazing in it and like Shawshank it too is uplifting.

By the way there is mystery in the Shawshank Redemption, we never know if Tim Riobins character actually did kill his wife or is innicoent

Yes we do know he is innocent, that is unless my memory is playing serious tricks on me.

And on the point about rape etc , other than a token scene the endemic nature of it in prisons by both 'good guys' and bad guys is completely glossed over, as is the whole issue of race.

As I say a nice Sunday afternoon film , no more.

Several films spring to my mind as ones I would watch again and again. Some are so memorable to me based on the powerful performances by the cast. Others just have an incredible story and plot. Others I just like... just because!

-White Heat (1949). James Cagney delivers one of the best, most gripping and most enrapturing performances as unhinged gangster Cody Jarrett who is murdering and robbing his way around California. His devotion to his hard-boiled Ma (a superb turn by Margaret Wycherly) is verging on the Oedipal, much to the disgust of his conniving girlfriend (Virginia Mayo). Edmond O'Brien is the undercover cop looking to break up Cody's gang.

The film whips along at a frenetic pace in spots, maintains a steady beat all through, however and any time Cagney is onscreen, he just wrenches your attention to him, even if he is merely sitting still. The power he radiates in this film is incredible.

-Goodfellas (1990). Scorsese really deserved an Oscar for this one (in addition to Taxi Driver and Raging Bull but that's another rant), telling the tale of Irish-Italian-American hoodlum Henry Hill as he begins his ascent from a gofer to a gangster in the New York mob. Joe Pesci and Robert deNiro are on hand in powerful supporting roles (the hot-headed, psychopathic Tommy and the cold, sociopathic Jimmy respectively). One of the best films of all time, easily. The true sequel that The Godfather Part II deserved... Nothing about this film is done in half measures; everything is glorious, expensive and expansive.

-Dog Day Afternoon (1975). Al Pacino delivers one of his best roles as Sonny Worjczik, who tries to rob a New York bank with his friend Sal (John Cazale. Things rapidly go pear-shaped as the duo spend far too long in the bank, resulting in the police laying siege to the bank and a tense and also hilarious stand-off ensues. Negotiations range from the serious to the out and out silly. Some scenes are laugh out loud funny. Some are tear jerkingly heartbreaking. But all have an intensity and a tension to them, as you remember how rapidly things could turn into a bloodbath, with both Worjczik and Sal both still armed robbers, despite their innocence and naivety. Excellent on all levels, but Pacino makes the film, with his twitchy and intense performance as the man trying to help those he loves with his crime.

-The Empire Strikes Back (1980). The best of all of the Star Wars films. Much darker, more visceral and much more entertaining than the pervious and succeeding films (in this one, The Galactic Empire is much more successful in their enterprises). As Darth Vader pursues and stalks the heroes of the Rebel Alliance across the galaxy (from icy military bases, to beautiful cities above the clouds), Luke enters Jedi training, to become the hope of the galaxy. The action scenes here are excellent, the story and the plot take the viewer on a wonderous and sometimes frightening trip across the galaxy and almost all of the subplots (romance, father-son conflicts, the ongoing civil war) are all handled deftly. Everything about this film, from the script to the direction to the score, are vastly superior to anything that has come before it and anything that followed it in the SW universe.

Plenty of others, I'm sure... but these are off the top of my head anyway!

Ahhh......too many to mention, but I'll try:

Aliens - I always get odd looks for this one.

Everyone has their one movie where they know more about it than any other film. To me, this film was just a fantastic example on how to do a sequel and get it so right. It takes the action path and expands on the Alien mythology without ever pissing on the original. The two of them go hand-in-hand yet being so different, nothing is rehashed.

It's got cliched characters in terms of the grunts but they don't irritate you. The special effects are top notch, really puts most of today's CGI to shame with it's practical effects (The powerloader, the Aliens themselves, the Facehuggers moving and running about). Cameron really struck it with such a big task he was given after The Terminator. It just has that constant feel of dread and when Ripley runs into the Alien Queen, it was introduced so brilliantly. The subsequent fight between them is excellent, having no score in the background as they fight just grabbed your attention. Plus the scene of when the Aliens first attacked them in the lower levels was filmed the day I was born :D

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly - Pffft, what more can you say about this film? Everything about this film just oozes cool; Cinematography, Clint, Wallach, Van Cleef, Morricone, the sheer epic scale of the story. Have been trying to get the GF to watch this as she wants to see Eastwood movies but big movies are like chloroforum to her, can't stay awake for anything :pac:

To Kill A Mocking Bird - Gregory Peck is the dad everyone wanted :pac:

Superman - Okay, not the greatest film but me and the sister grew up loving these films. The 1st one in particular is always a joy to watch, such a nice, unpretentious film :pac:

Other have already been mentioned like Goodfellas, Dog Day Afternoon, Trainspotting, etc...........plenty more just can't think of them at the mo'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,377 ✭✭✭Warper

I agree with Aliens - brilliant film. I suppose really if youre talking about you favourite films you are talking about films you have seen a few times. The ones I couldnt stop watching as a kid were Star Wars, Aliens, Platoon and Goodfellas.

For me it's tough as I like certain genres of films over others but I'll give it a go:

Comedy: Team Anerica, I think gets overlooked allot but it's endlessly quoteable and how it pokes fun at action films is quality even the dialouge is so cringey it's epic. A nod also goes to aeroplane and Borat.

Action: Tough one for me as I love these but I'll say Taken. perfect brain off and watch kinda film.

Epic: Gladiator, nothing really needs to be said. Perfect film.

Drama: hard again but I'll fit in the usual suspects into this. Best ending ever seen in a film IMHO.

Random: Rounders: as a poker player it's a must see and a well acted all round film. Norton, Damon both top form in it with malcovich chewing scenery all over the place.

Sport: Any given Sunday, so OTT it's epic with Al Pacino giving the best speech/scene.

Horror: Nightmare on elm street orginal. Frightened the ****e out of me as a young fella and the only film to ever do that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,150 ✭✭✭✭LuckyGent88

Obviously everybody has different views on films but here would be my choices.
Comedy: Hardest category to pick as i have too my favouites, Would have to be Happy Gilmore (as a golfer myself) but others favs would include Anchorman, Airplane, Holy Grail & Borat
    Action:
Fight Club or Terminator 2...just great movies from start to finish.
As a Kid: The film i loved as a kid would have to be the first Home Alone..Its just classic and every kid would have loved to done those traps as a child!!!!
Epic: Clearly is between Gladiator, Braveheart & Saving Private Ryan(easily best opening to a film)
Sport: Any Given Sunday(best speech in a film)
Gangster: Godfather and Goodfellas...just absolute classics with superb acting performances

But best film of all time in my opinion is 300....its just unbelievable and could watch it every day

For me a film has to have only two things to make it great but very few films have them:

1- Has to have characters you care about, whether they live/die or succeed/fail
    2- A great script

A bonus is great acting, when you get to that stage your really are on a winner.

With that in mind my favourite movies are Shawshank, Heat, LA confidential, Unforgiven, Goodfellas, Glengarry Glenross, T2, Carlitos Way, Schlinders List and probably Pulp Fiction and trainspotting just about though they haven't aged as well as the other films on the list in my opinion.

Fightclub, Seven, Casino, City of God, The last of the mohicans, blade runner, american history X, Michael Collins, Fargo, Con Air, Mission Impossible, Memento, In Bruges, Platoon, JFK are all really good as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,643 ✭✭✭Phoenix Park

Heat: powerful stuff, super acting and great feeling of tension building throughout

    Silence of the Lambs
: similar to above, could watch it twice in a day, Lecter,Clarice, Bill...all great characters

Irreversible: shockingly disturbing, stays with you well after seeing it, found it depressing but compelling, not one for the kids

I think The Social Network will go down as a great movie, was surprised just how good it really is.

For something a little bit less mainstream I recommend Capturing the Friedmans, its a feature length documentary, I wouldn't read anything about it before watching it though and you'll enjoy it all the more

Armageddon one of your favourites? Really???

Haha, yeah it actually is - I know its a big cheesy soppy all out romantic action here stuff - but I just love it. I'd say I've seen it about 20 times

the first time I watched it, I was 17, and it was at home with my bro and a few of his friends, and I BAWLED my eyes out when Bruce Willis shuts the lift. (I was mortified cos I didnt want to look uncool by crying infront of my brothers friends)

I love a good old action flick like these.

Platoon is another excellent one, oh and Billy Elliott - absolutely savage soundtrack.

I would have to agree with a lot of posters here for favourite movies.

Aliens - Definitely. I know the script off by heart at this stage. (And it also has Bill Paxton in it)

But I didn't see 12 Angry Men in any post. For me this is one of the finest courtroom dramas out there.

And even though I will be slagged for it, A Few Good Men is also up there with the best of them.

The Thing would be my favourite horror movie.
As for comedys, it would be a choice between The Producers (original) and Anchorman

The Empire Strikes Back. It's just a perfect movie. A rare example of taking something brilliant and actually making something better out of it. Every single component is just right, from the performances, to the visuals and music and tone to the technical side of things. I think a lot of cineasts discount it because it's not artistic or 'grown up' enough but honestly there will never be another movie like it.

Also beyond just being a movie it acts like a kind of anchor to my childhood. It's like the glue that holds together my memories and feelings of being a kid. So much so even if it's 100 years from now when I find out I'm going to die I'm going to fit that movie into my goodbye ritual. It was there at the start of my conscious life and I'm gonna make sure it's there at the end. It's that important to me. My 'rosebud' so to speak.

My favourite film is Predator II, starring Danny Glover and Bill Paxton. I think we can all agree that Bill Paxton is the greatest actor of his generation, and maybe even of all time.

predator 2 also had the very great GARY BUSEY

Favourite films of all time: Once Upon a time in America, has it all for me, amazing. Closely followed by Godfather then anything with Paul Newman in it.

Comedy:This is Spinal Tap followed by American Psycho

Western:The Good the Bad and the Ugly, honerable mentions, Unforgiven, Butch and Sundance and Westworld.

Sports: He Got Game, that's the closest thing to a sports movie which i'd even consider for my favourites list.

Animation: The Jungle Book, Alladin and the pixar movies of which i'd pick Monsters inc.

Horror: Psycho, The Shining and the American remake of The Ring one of the few remakes which i find better than the original, scared the bejesus out of me.

Christmas films: Home Alone 1 & 2, can't get enough of them.

Guilty pleasure: Saturday Night Fever, very underrated movie imo. It's Mean Streets with extra Bee Gees :pac:

Oh and best recent film i've seen There Will be Blood, ok i'll stop now.
