    There was a great review of Damascus in the New York Times;
    http://travel.nytimes.com/2010/12/05/travel/05hours.html

    So it has ignited a curiosity about travelling there maybe next year. I might do a trip taking in somewhere in Lebanon too.

    Has anyone been or knows which is the best way of getting there? And maybe the best time of year to visit, weather wise, or cultural event wise?

    Well, i am thinkng now of flying to Lebanon, and from there through Syria and finishing in Istanbul, Turkey. Do I need visas for all 3 of these countries? And what would be the best way of getting from Beirut-Damascus-Istanbul?
